Centennial Moments: Badminton Enjoys Successful One-Year Stint as a Varsity Sport

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Nearly a decade before Babson Institute became a four-year college, badminton enjoyed one season as a varsity sport thanks to graduate student Dave Sime M'60.

Sime, who served as player/coach for the team, was one of the region's top players. The sqaud played matches against local schools, including Wellesley College, and through his efforts, Babson was selected to host the 1960 College Badminton Championships of New England inside Peavey Gymnasium.

The tournament was a success for both Babson and Sime, who won the men's singles championship and the mixed doubles championship. Unfortunately, the tournament was the final act for Babson's badminton squad, which did not make a return as a varsity sport after the winter of 1960.
