WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Babson College Athletic Department hosted its 29th annual President's Cup Golf Tournament at the beautiful Wellesley Country Club this past Monday, where the event proved once again to be a fantastic fund-raising effort for the department.
A total of 120 golfers participated in this year's tournament, which featured 18 sponsors, including title sponsor Sodexo Food Services and Presidential sponsors Santander, Citizens Bank, and Office Environments of New England. The event, which raised over $65,000 for the department, was won by the foursome of Rob Flaherty P'13, Paul Kangas, Jim Housmann, and Jim Hayes, who posted the top gross score in the "shamble" format. The first place team based on net scoring consisted of Dave Sargent '82 P'13, Gary Newcomb '81, Bob Kelly '81, and David Ryan '81.
Another major highlight on Monday was the presentation of the Jon T. Barry Award to Don Page P'83. A die-hard fan of Babson Athletics since his son David played basketball for the Beavers, Page has remained one of the strongest supporters of both the College and the President's Cup over the last three decades. His membership at Wellesley Country Club was one of the driving forces in the tournament's return to the spectacular venue, and Page himself has won the event numerous times.
The Barry Award, named in memory of Jon T. Barry '65, is presented each year to an alumus or friend of the College who best exemplifies the qualities of enthusiasm, presence, involvement, loyalty, sense of humor, sportsmanship, support, and volunteerism for Babson Athletics. Page now joins previous winners Gloria Gutierrez Gaiter '87, former President Brian M. Barefoot '66 P'01, Chris "Doc" Troyanos, Carl Citron, Bob Kelly '81, Bill Glavin H'99, and Ron and Virginia Masnicki P'97 '00, who won the inaugural award back in 2003.
Also on Monday, the official drawing was held for the Athletics
Department's first annual Super-Raffle. The winners can be found here.
