Bowman Earns All-Region Accolades at NCAA New England Track and Field Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Babson College track and field team sent seven individuals and two relay teams to the 2009 NCAA New England Division III Championships at Springfield College this weekend. Highlighting the event for the Beavers was first-year Justin Bowman (Plymouth, Mass.), who celebrated his regional debut by earning All-New England honors in the 800 meter run.
Seeded 18th heading into the event, Bowman capped off his magnificent rookie campaign with another stellar run, finishing eighth overall with a time of 1:56.11. It was just .02 seconds shy of his own school record set last weekend, and it earned him a spot on the All-New England Team. He is just the fourth male in Babson track and field history to earn NCAA All-Region status, joining Brian Gagne, Chris Perry, who did it twice, and Dan Cowan, who did it three times.
Also competing at New Englands were junior captain Katie Trant (Westfield, Mass.) and first-year Alexa Untermann (Honolulu, Hawaii), who both recorded leaps of 4 feet, 10 1/4 inches in the high jump. Trant placed 11th based on the number of attempts, while Untermann placed 15th. Junior captain Lauren Blackburn (York, Maine) finished 15th in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.90 seconds - her second fastest mark of the season - while also placing 16th in the 400 hurdles in 1:07.71 - her best time of the spring. First-year Nicki Wurdeman (Rowley, Mass.) finished 15th in the discus (107 feet, 5 inches) and 17th in the shot put (34 feet, 2 3/4 inches), and Untermann and Blackburn joined first-years Colleen Carr (Brewer, Maine) and Michelle Black (San Diego, Calif.) to place 16th in the 4x400 meter relay. Their time of 4:24.12 was the second fastest in program history behind their own record set earlier this season.
Joining Bowman on the men's side of the meet were senior captains Kevin Butera (Walpole, Mass.) and Greg Keshian (North Andover, Mass.). Butera placed 20th in the triple jump with a distance of 41 feet, 3 inches, while Keshian finished 29th in the 10000 meter run with a time of 36:08.62.
