• Margel, Black, Smith Represent Babson at ECAC Track and Field Championships

    Three members of the Babson College women’s track and field team competed at the 2011 ECAC Championships hosted by Moravian College on Friday. Sophomore Charlotte Margel (Ridgewood, N.J.) made her second straight appearance at the event, while junior Michelle Black (San Diego, Calif.) and first-year Imani Smith (Fort Mill, S.C.) each made their ECAC debut. After failing to finish the 10,000 meter run due to injury at last year’s ECAC Championships, Margel qualified again this spring in both the 10,000 and 5000 meter events. Forgoing Friday’s 10k in favor of Saturday’s shorter race, Margel finished 16th overall in the 5000 meter run with a final time of 18:27.62 – the second fastest time in Babson history behind only her own program record of 18:22.12 set earlier this season. Black added a 29th-place finish in the 5000, while Smith capped off her spectacular rookie season by placing 14th in the 400 meter hurdles.

    Sophomore Charlotte Margel and first-year Imani Smith made Babson College track and field history this weekend, as both collected All-Region honors at the 2011 NCAA New England Division III Championships held at MIT. The women's team placed 22nd while the men did not score at the event, which lasted nearly 11 hours thanks to more than four hours of lightning delays.

    The Babson College track and field teams combined to set three school records and 16 personal bests at the 2011 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships at the United States coast Guard Academy on Saturday. The men's team finished sixth overall at the competition, while the women placed ninth. Will Hallock and Marcus Edwards both qualified for the NCAA Division III New England Championships, while Edwards, junior Michelle Black, and Ricardo Azcarraga all set new program marks.

    Despite battling steady rain, extreme cold, and ferocious winds, the Babson College track and field teams enjoyed a stellar day at the Silfen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College on Saturday. The Babson women finished 11th out of 19 scoring teams at the event, while the men placed 13th out of the 19 squads that registered points. First-year Will Hallock turned in the two biggest highlights of the day for the Beavers. He finished first overall in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:15.97 - the top performance of his young career and the third fastest time in program history. Hallock also factored in on Babson's record-setting 4x800 relay team, as he joined junior Justin Bowman, first-year Nate Kolman, and first-year Eduardo Arechabala in placing third with a time of 8:33.95 - surpassing the previous mark set back in 2003 by nearly ten full seconds.

    Despite battling frigid temperatures and harsh winds, the Babson College track and field teams had a stellar day at the non-scoring MIT Spring Invitational on Saturday. The Beavers recorded a number of personal bests, while seeing two more athletes qualify for postseason competition. Highlighting the women's half of the event were sophomore Charlotte Margel and first-year Imani Smith. Margel broke the program record in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:22.12, surpassing the previous mark set by teammate Michelle Black last week. In doing so, Margel also qualifed for the ECAC Track and Field Championships. Smith also had an outstanding day for the Beavers, posting a time of 1:09.87 in the 400 meter hurdles, which qualified her for the NCAA Division III New England Championships.
  • Black's Record-Setting Effort Leads Track and Field At UMass-Dartmouth

    Junior Michelle Black became just the second Babson College track and field athlete to qualify for the ECAC Championships this spring on Saturday, as she led the Beavers at the Corsair Classic Invitational hosted by UMass-Dartmouth. With Black leading the way, the women's team finished sixth overall, while the men placed ninth. Black was sensational in the 5000 meter run, finishing first overall with a gigantic personal and Babson record of 18:40.59. That mark was not only almost 12 seconds faster than the previous school record of 18:52.20 set by Lydia Halloran back in 2005, but was one minute and three seconds quicker than Black's previous best in the event. In addition to setting a new program mark, the junior standout qualified for the NCAA Division III New England Championships and the ECAC Championships for the first time in her career.
  • Track and Field Enjoys Strong Day At Coast Guard Invitational

    The Babson College track and field teams both finished 11th at the United States Coast Guard Academy Spring Invitational on Saturday. Both teams featured five top-10 finishes at the competition, including five top-five performances. For the women, sophomore charlotte Margel and junior Michelle Black both turned in magnificent efforts in the 1500 meter run. Margel posted the best time of her career and the second fastest in Babson history with a 4:58.72, placing her fourth overall. Black was close behind in fifth place with a PR of 5:00.06 - the fourth fastest time in program history. For the men, junior Justin Bowman recorded the second fastest time of his career while placing 10th in the 400 meter dash. His run of 52.38 seconds just second only to his own program record of 51.39.
  • Women's Track and Field Takes 12th, Men 15th At Westfield State

    The Babson College track and field teams competed in its first scoring meet of the season on Saturday, as the Beavers placed 12th on the women's side and 15th on the men's side at the Gerry Gravel Invitational at Westfield State University. The Babson women were led by first-year Imani Smith, who in her first collegiate meet placed third in both the 100 meter hurdles and the 400 meter hurdles. Her time of 16.70 seconds in the 100 hurdles was the eighth fastest in program history in that event. Also turning in another brilliant effort was sophomore Charlotte Margel, who followed up last week's dominating effort in the 10000 meters by placing third in the 5000. Her time of 18:55.67 was her personal best and is the third fastest time in Babson history. The men's half of the meet featured four top-10 finishes, highlighted by a third-place run by first-year Brian deLeon in the 10000 meter run. His final of 33:39.84 was the fifth fastest in program history. Fellow freshman Ricardo Azcarraga also had a big day, placing ninth in the 100 meter dash and 10th in the 200 meter dash - his time of 23.87 seconds in the latter representing the program's 11th fastest time ever.
  • Margel Leads Track And Field At Northeastern Spring Open

    The Babson College track and field teams opened their 2011 season at the non-scoring Northeastern Spring Open at the Solomon Track in Dedham on Saturday. Highlighting the day for Babson was sophomore star Charlotte Margel, who posted the fastest time of her career and the second fastest in program history in the 10000 meter run by completing the race with a time of 39:56.14. As a result, she placed fifth overall in the event and qualified for both the NCAA and the ECAC New England Championships for the second consecutive year.
