  • Capalbo, Track & Field Squads Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

    NEW ORLEANS—After setting three school records and reaching the NCAA National Championships in May, Babson College junior Marina Capalbo (Gainesville, Va.) was recognized by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday morning, garnering All-Academic honors for the second straight year. Additionally, both the men’s and women’s squads were awarded with All-Academic team honors for their work in the classroom.

    BABSON PARK, Mass.—After becoming just the third female in program history to earn All-New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and All-New England track & field honors in the same year, junior Marina Capalbo (Gainesville, Va.) picked up her second consecutive bid to the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championship when the field for the 1500-meter run was announced on May 18.

    THE SETUP: Babson College junior Marina Capalbo will make her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA National Championship meet on Thursday when she competes in the women's 1500-meter prelims. Capalbo, who had the 15th best time among the event's 22 qualifiers, will run in the second of two heats with the top four from each heat, along with the next four best times, advancing to Saturday's finals.

The standout junior, one of just 22 runners to earn a bid in the 1500 meters, posted a time of 4:43.91 to come in 19th in the preliminaries at Selby Stadium on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University.

    THE SETUP: Four individuals and one men's relay team will compete at the ECAC Championships on Thursday and Friday at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. On the women's side, senior Imani Smith will compete in the 400-meter hurdles and junior Marina Capalbo will take part in the 800 and 1500 meters, while classmate Mark Gulesian will run the men's 1500 meters and sophomore Dominic Esposito will compete in the decathlon. Gulesian, along with seniors Brian deLeon and Nate Kolman, as well as first-year Will Nemeth, will also take part in the 4x800 relay.

    THE SETUP: The Babson College men’s and women’s track & field teams will send seven individuals as well as the men’s 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams to compete at the NCAA New England Championships hosted by Springfield College starting on Thursday afternoon. The three-day meet will start with day one of the decathlon on Thursday, day two of the decathlon along with the 10,000-meter run on Friday, before wrapping up with a full day of track and field events on Saturday.

He will then wrap up the competition with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1500-meter run on Thursday.
