Women's Track & Field Ninth in NEWMAC Preseason Poll
BOSTON, Mass.—Following a ninth-place finish at the 2013 conference championship meet, the Babson College women's track & field team was picked to finish ninth when the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) released its first-ever preseason poll on Friday.
Five-time defending champion MIT garnered the top spot, collecting all nine first-place votes, while two-time runner-up Wheaton came in second. Springfield was third, followed by WPI in fourth, and Coast Guard and Smith coming in fifth and sixth, respectively. Wellesley finished seventh and Mount Holyoke was eighth.
The Beavers return a pair of their top performers in senior Imani Smith (Fort Mill, S.C.) and junior Marina Capalbo (Gainesville, Va.). Smith owns the second-fastest time in program history in the 400 meters, and holds four of the top six times in the 400 meter hurdles. Capalbo became the first track & field athlete in school history to qualify for the NCAA National Championships last spring, earning a bid in the 1500 meters. She holds program records in both the 800 and 1500 meters, and was just the sixth Babson female to earn All-New England accolades last year.
Babson opens the season at Bridgewater State on Saturday, March 22.
