Margel Earns All-Conference Accolades As Cross Country Runs At NEWMAC Championships

FRANKLIN PARK, Mass. -- First-year Charlotte Margel (Ridgewood, N.J.) became just the second woman in program history to earn All-Conference honors on Saturday, as the Babson College cross-country teams competed at the 2009 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships at Franklin Park. The women finished seventh out of nine teams at the competition, while the men took fifth out of seven squads.
Margel highlighted the day for the Beavers, finishing 14th overall with a time of 20:10 to earn NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team honors. She joined Lydia Halloran '05 as the only two women in Babson cross-country history to earn All-League status. Halloran earned Second Team honors with a 10th-place finish in 2004.
Also running well for the women's team were sophomore
Michelle Black (San Diego, Calif.), who
finished 31st overall with a time of 21:11, and senior
Vanessa Lovering (Hollis, N.H.), who came in 55th
in 21:57. Sophomore Colleen Carr (Brewer, Maine)
came in 74th with a run of 22:47, followed by first-year
Jessica Lack (West Chester, Pa.) in 89th in
23:29, sophomore captain Emiley McCole (West Bridgewater,
Mass.) in 95th in 23:44, and senior Kristen
Lang (Kennebunk, Maine), who battled through injury to
place 100th with a time of 24:06 in her final conference
championship meet.
In the men's race, sophomore Kyle Fitzpatrick (Toledo,
Ohio) posted Babson's top finish in just his second
race of the year, placing 20th overall wth a time of 27:40.
Sophomore Mike Smith (Brockton, Mass.) came
in 32nd with a time of 28:05, and first-year Jake Williams
(Scaggsville, Md.) followed in 39th with a run of
28:31 in his NEWMAC Championship debut. Sophomore Andrew
Oram (Northborough, Mass.) added a 51st-place effort in
29:05, first-year Mark Irwin (Essex,
Vermont) came in 77th in 30:24, first-year
Chris Pierce (Wilton, Conn.) placed 90th in
31:14, and junior captain Jordan Bray (Henderson,
Nev.) finished 97th 31:41. Returning from injury to
bolster the Beavers' lineup were sophomore captain Kwami
Chambers-Powell (Middletown, Conn.), who came in 115th in
33:26 in his second run of the year, and junior Jared
Bartlett (Penfield, N.Y.), who finished 120th in 35:50 in
his first race of the season.
