    NEW ORLEANS, La.—Following arguably the best season in program history, Babson College junior Marina Capalbo (Gainsville, Va.) added to her achievements late last week, earning U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic accolades for the second consecutive year. Additionally, both the women's and men's cross country teams were honored for their work in the classroom with All-Academic Team honors.

    HANOVER, Ind.—Babson College junior Marina Capalbo (Gainesville, Va.) made her NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championship debut on Saturday morning, finishing 132nd out of 280 runners with a time of 22:48 in the six-kilometer race at the L.S. Ayers Complex on the campus of Hanover College.

    HOW WE GOT HERE: Junior Marina Capalbo became the first in the 36-year history of the Babson College cross country program to qualify for the 2013 NCAA Division III National Championships when she was selected as one of 56 individuals from non-qualifying teams last Sunday. Capalbo set a new program record in the 6K at last Saturday’s NCAA New England Regional, coming in 25th out of 371 harriers with a time 22:04.06 at the Narragansett School Course in Gorham, Maine. Along with being the first to qualify for nationals, Capalbo is one of only two females to earn All-NEWMAC honors twice, and is the only two-time All-New England harrier in school history.

Not to be outdone, classmate Marina Capalbo (Gainesville, Va.) posted the second-fastest time in program history to finish third as the women’s team came in 13th out of 38 teams.

Both fields were loaded with many of the region’s top teams as the schools’ got their first look at the host course for the NCAA regional meet in November. The men continued their strong start to the fall with a ninth-place finish among 19 teams, while the women came in 14th.

    Women Babson is making its third straight appearance at the New England College Mayflower Kickoff event to start its season and is hoping to continue the success they have achieved the past two seasons. The Beavers, led by Charlotte Margel’s ’13 individual victory, finished first in 2011 and followed that up with a third-place finish last season as current junior Marina Capalbo pulled away to earn the individual 5K title. Capalbo finished the race in 20:34 to claim the first individual win of her collegiate career by 17 seconds. Current sophomore Kelli Halligan made her debut for Babson and finished seventh while current junior Rebekah Miller came in 19th. Current senior Alyssa Carelli and Jess Lack ’13 finished 33rd and 38th, respectively.

    BOSTON, Mass.—The New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) released its first-ever conference preseason polls on Monday afternoon and MIT, the defending men’s and women’s champions, was the unanimous choice to repeat, collecting all eight first-place votes on the men's side and 11 votes on the women's side, respectively.
