Besinger, Ahern Represent Babson Baseball In Prestigious Summer Leagues
This summer two members of the Babson College baseball team were selected to play in two highly prestigious collegiate summer baseball leagues. Rising senior Billy Besinger (Milton, Mass.) saw time with three different teams in the famous Cape Cod League this summer, including the Bourne Braves, Chatham Anglers, and most recently the Falmouth Commodores, while fifth-year senior pitcher David Ahern (Bedford, Mass.) spent the summer playing for the Sanford Mainers located in Sanford, Maine, as part of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). Besinger played in 19 games this summer with the Cape Cod League, hitting .255 during the regular season, including a .286 clip in 11 games for Falmouth. For the season, he amassed 13 hits and three RBIs, with three of those hits coming in an 11-3 win over the Hyannis Mariners. For the Mainers, Ahern appeared in 16 games on the mound, pitching 21 2/3 innings with a brilliant 1.66 ERA. He allowed just 21 hits and three walks while striking out 11.

Baseball's Season Ends With Tough Loss To RIC
The Rhode Island College baseball team scored 22 runs on 25 hits on its way to a 22-6 victory over host Babson College in a non-conference contest at Govoni Field on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Anchormen improve to 19-13 on the year, while Babson sees its season come to a close with a record of 20-14-1. Senior Michael O’Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.) started and took the loss for Babson, dropping his season record to 4-3. The senior lefthander gave up eight runs – only four of which were earned – while striking out two in his final collegiate appearance. Offensively, the Beavers were led by sophomore Travis Jonasson (Needham, Mass.), who went 2-for-4 with his fourth home run of the season, one run scored, and two RBIs. Senior captain Dave Ahern (Bedford, Mass.) added a triple, a run, and an RBI in the loss, while first-year Conor Kortmann (Manalapan, N.J.) also drove in a run in defeat.

Baseball Forced To Settle For Rare 7-7 Tie At USM
The University of Southern Maine baseball team rallied from a 6-0 deficit to forge a 7-7 tie with Babson College Wednesday afternoon in a game shortened to six innings by rain and poor field conditions. The game was called in the middle of the seventh inning after Babson finished batting. Southern Maine did not get to bat in the home half of the inning as the umpires called the game. The final score then reverted back to the last completed inning.

O'Brien Garners NEWMAC Pitcher of the Year Honors To Highlight Baseball Postseason Awards
Four players from the Babson College baseball team earned New England Women’s and Men’s Athletics Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference honors for the 2010 season, while two others were named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team. Senior left-handed pitcher Michael O’Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.) highlighted the Beavers’ list of honorees when he was selected as the NEWMAC Pitcher of the Year while also earning All-Conference First Team status. Joining O’Brien on the first team were senior outfielder Dave Ahern (Bedford, Mass.) and junior second baseman Billy Besinger (Milton, Mass.). Earning second team honors was sophomore first baseman Travis Jonasson (Needham, Mass.). Junior Corey Highfield (East Hampstead, N.H.) and sophomore Kendall Chaves (West Tisbury, Mass.) were also recognized, as both were named to the Academic All-Conference squad.

Coast Guard Knocks Baseball Out Of NEWMAC Tourney, 14-5
Fifth seed United States Coast Guard Academy used a seven-run eighth inning to pull away from the second-seeded Babson College baseball team in Saturday's first elimination game of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament, as the Bears upset the Beavers by a 14-5 count at Wheaton College's Sidell Stadium. Improving to 11-17 overall, Coast Guard stays on the field to face third seed Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in today's final elimination game and the right to advance to tomorrow's championship round against the host Lyons. Babson (20-13) sees its chances of winning its second straight conference title come to an end with its second loss of the tourney. Senior Jake Bartlett (Weymouth, MA/Boston College) was 3-for-4 with a run scored, while six other Beavers had a hit each, including senior Peter O'Toole (Salem, MA/Saint John's Prep), who scored twice.

WPI Hands Baseball First Tournament Defeat, 9-4
Third-seeded WPI hit four home runs and senior Thomas Whiting (Farmington Hills, Mich.) tossed a complete game on the mound as the Engineers defeated second-seeded host Babson College, 9-4, on day two of the 2010 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Double-Elimination Baseball Tournament at Govoni Field on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers move on to play in the winner’s bracket on Saturday, while Babson will play an elimination game the same day. Both contests will be played at Wheaton with times and opponents to be determined. Sophomore Travis Jonasson (Needham, Mass.) hit his third home run of the season for the Beavers, while first-year John Botelho (Tempe, Ariz.) added two doubles and two RBIs.

Babson Begins NEWMAC Title Defense With 8-1 Win Over Coast Guard
Babson College senior lefthander Michael O'Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.) earned a complete game victory as the second-seeded Beavers posted an 8-1 win over fifth-seeded Coast Guard in the opening game of the 2010 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Double-Elimination Baseball Tournament at Govoni Field on Wednesday. With the victory, the Beavers improve to 20-11 and earn the right to host their second tournament game against either #4 Clark or #2 WPI at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Coast Guard falls to 9-17 and will host #6 MIT in a 3:30 p.m. elmination game tomorrow. Babson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as senior captain Peter O’Toole (Salem, Mass.) lined a double off the wall in right center and junior Billy Besinger (Milton, Mass.) followed with a two-run shot to center – his third homer of the season.

The Babson College baseball team defeated visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology, 15-6, in a non-conference matchup at Govoni Field on Monday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers improve to 19-11, while Wentworth dips to 20-11. Babson was led by senior captain Dave Ahern (Bedford, Mass.), who went 4-for-5 with a double, four runs scored, and two RBIs. Sophomore righthander Jeff Burress (Cumberland, R.I.) got the win after pitching five innings, allowing three runs – all of which were unearned – and striking out two.

Lyon Named NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week For Second Time
For the second time in three weeks, Babson College first-year Kyle Lyon (Flemington, N.J.) has been chosen as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week. In his only start of the week, Lyon held Clark to just three hits and two walks in 7 2/3 shutout innings to guide Babson to an 11-0 victory over the Cougars on Tuesday. The rookie righthander struck out five in the contest, as he improved to 4-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.77.

Baseball Falls to Brandeis, 10-5
On a day that featured numerous brief rain showers, the Brandeis University baseball team defeated host Babson College, 10-5, Sunday afternoon. Originally scheduled to be played at Brandeis, the game was switched to Babson to take advantage of better field conditions. Brandeis improved to 9-18 and snapped a seven-game losing streak with the victory, while Babson fell to 18-11 on the campaign.

Curry Blanks Baseball, 7-0
Curry College scored six unearned runs, including five in the first inning, to claim a 7-0 victory over host Babson College in a non-conference baseball matchup at Govoni Field on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Colonels improved to 19-10 on the season, while the Beavers, ranked seventh in New England by the NEIBA, fell to 18-10. Sophomore Sean Cleary (Milton, Mass.), sophomore Billy Miller (Sagamore Beach, Mass.), and senior Jake Bartlett (Weymouth, Mass.) each had two hits apiece for Babson, while senior southpaw Michael O’Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.) suffered the tough-luck loss despite allowing no earned runs and striking out four in five innings. His record now stands at 3-2 this spring.

UMass Boston Topples Baseball, 20-7
The visiting UMass Boston baseball team scored 20 runs on 23 hits as they defeated the host Beavers on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni field, 20-7. The Beacons were led by senior Jeff Outzen (San Mateo, Calif.) who hit two home runs for six RBI’s on the day. With the loss, The Beavers dip to 18-9 overall and the Beacons improve to 14-9 on the season. Babson would score three runs in the seventh when first-year Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass.) hit his team high fifth homerun of the season bringing in teammates Billy Besinger (Milton, Mass.) and sophomore Sean Cleary (Milton, Mass.).

First-year Kyle Lyon (Flemington, N.J.) combined with two other pitchers on a three-hit shutout and senior captain Brian Scanlon (Lawrenceville, N.J.) drove in three runs as the Babson College Beavers blanked visiting Clark University, 11-0, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball game at Govoni Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, Babson (18-8 overall, 8-4 NEWMAC), ranked seventh in New England, concluded its regular season conference play and can finish no lower than third in the final NEWMAC standings. As a result, the Beavers will host at least a first round game of the six-team, double-elimination tournament next Wednesday, April 21, at 3:30 p.m.

Eastern Connecticut Edges Baseball, 7-5, In Matchup Of Regionally-Ranked Foes
The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team built a 6-2 lead and then withstood a late Babson College comeback as the Warriors held on to defeat the Beavers, 7-5, at Babson’s Govoni Field on Monday afternoon. Ranked fifth in New England by the NEIBA and 13th in the nation by the NCBWA, Eastern Connecticut improved to 17-6 on the season with the victory, while Babson, ranked seventh in New England, fell to 17-8 with the loss. Sophomore Billy Miller (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Babson, while senior captain Peter O’Toole (Salem, Mass.) and first-year Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass.) each added two hits, a run, and an RBI.

The Wheaton College baseball team swept a key New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at Babson College on Saturday, as they Lyons edged the Beavers in game one, 2-1, before running away with game two, 16-7. Game one featured a magnificent pitchers’ duel between Wheaton sophomore Nolan Corr (Somerwsorth, N.H.) and Babson senior Michael O’Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.). The Lyons struck first with a key unearned run in the top of the first, but Babson tied it in the bottom of the second when first-year Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass.) ripped his fourth home run of the season over the wall in right.

Cleary, Besinger Help Propel Baseball Past Springfield, 14-4
The Babson College baseball team scored four runs in top of the first and never looked back as it cruised to a 14-4 victory over Springfield College on Thursday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest. The Beavers, ranked first in New England by the NEIBA, improve to 17-5 overall and 7-2 in the conference, while the Pride drop to 9-13, 2-5 in league play. Milton natives Sean Cleary and Billy Besinger both had monster games in the win for Babson. Cleary finished the game going 5-for-6 at the dish with five RBI, while Besinger also registered five RBI on a 4-for-5 performance. Rookie starter Kyle Lyon remained unbeaten at 3-0 after tossing eight innings of seven-hit ball, allowing just three earned runs while striking out six.

The Babson College baseball team scored nine runs in the eighth inning to take the lead on their way to a 17-13 victory over visiting Endicott College on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field. The Beavers hit seven homeruns in the win to set a new program record for most four-baggers in a game. Babson was led by senior captains Dave Ahern (Bedford, Mass.) and Brian Scanlon (Lawrenceville, N.J.) who each finished with four hits and two homeruns apiece. With the win, Babson, ranked first in New England, snaps a brief two-game slide and improves to 16-5 on the season.

First-year pitcher Kyle Lyon (Flemington, N.J.) was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday - the same day that his team earned a ranking of first in the region by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA). In his only appearance of the week, Lyon pitched a complete game in a 4-1 win over Johnson and Wales on Friday. In nine innings, the rookie righthander allowed just one unearned run on seven hits, walked one and struck out a career-high six. With the win, he improved his season record to 2-0 and lowered his ERA to 3.47 in four appearances this spring.

With the losses, the Engineers drop to 5-8 (0-5 NEWMAC) on the year, while Babson has won 15 of its last 16 to rise to 5-1 in the NEWMAC and 15-3 overall. Sophomore catcher Sean Cleary (Milton, Mass.) hit a walk-off single to deep left to score first-year Billy Hocking (Duxbury, Mass.) from third in the bottom of the 13th inning as the Babson College baseball team claimed a dramatic 9-8 victory over visiting Worcester State College in a non-conference contest at Govoni Field on Sunday afternoon. It was the 11th straight victory for the Beavers, who improved to 11-2 overall, while the Lancers fell to 10-4-1 with the loss. Trailing 7-3, Babson staged a dramatic comeback with five two-out runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a three-run homer by first-year Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass.) that briefly put the Beavers in front, 8-7.

The Beavers then topped the Engineers, 12-6, in game two to complete the sweep and extend their winning streak to 10 games.

O'Toole Homer Gives Baseball 8-5 Win Over Keene State
Senior captain Peter O’Toole (Salem, Mass.) hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to snap a 5-5 tie and propel Babson College to an 8-5 win over visiting Keene State College in a non-conference baseball contest at Govoni Field on Thursday afternoon. With their eighth consecutive win, the Beavers improved to 8-2 overall, while the Owls dropped to 7-6 on the spring. O’Toole was one of five Babson players with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs. Sophomore Jeff Browne (Vorhees, N.J.) picked up the win (1-0) in relief for the Beavers, going two innings and allowing one run on one hit, walking one and striking out three, while first-year Brian Swanton (Foxboro, Mass.) earned his first collegiate save with a scoreless ninth. Sophomore Travis Jonasson (Needham, Mass.) also had a good day at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a homer, two runs, and three RBIs.

The Babson College baseball team finished up its spring break trip to Florida with its third consecutive victory on Wednesday, as the Beavers defeated Amherst College, 17-8. As a result, Babson will return home with a record of 3-2. The team will now fly home to resume its 2010 campaign with its conference opener at home on Saturday, as the Beavers host a 12 p.m. double-header with NEWMAC foe Coast Guard at Govoni Field.

Buress, Scanlon Propel Baseball Past NEC, 4-0
Sophomore righthander Jeff Buress (Cumberland, R.I.) fired a five-hit shutout and senior captain Brian Scanlon (Lawrenceville, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs as the Babson College baseball team evened its record at 2-2 with a 4-0 win over New England College on Tuesday. Buress was spectacular in his first start of the season, going all nine innings and allowing no runs on five hits, walking none and striking out two. The win was the second of his young career, while the shutout was his first at the collegiate level.

Lyon, Dadio Combine To Shut Out St. Mary, 4-0, As Baseball Snags First Win Of 2010
First-year Kyle Lyon and junior Austin Dadio combined for a 10-hit shutout as the Babson College baseball team earned its first victory of 2010 with a 4-0 blanking of St. Mary's (MD) on Monday. With the win, the Beavers are now 1-2 on the season. Lyon was outstanding in his collegiate debut, scattering seven hits and four walks over 5 1/3 scoreless innings as he earned the first win of his Babson career. The rookie righthander struck out four before giving way to Dadio with one away in the sixth. An outfielder or pinch-hitter in his previous 12 collegiate games, Dadio was also brilliant in his first career appearance on the mound for the Beavers, tossing 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief while allowing just three hits to earn the save.

The Babson baseball squad was edged out by a single run for the second straight day on Sunday, as the Beavers fell to William Paterson, 3-2, on day two of the team's spring break trip to Florida. Sophomore Trevor MacNeill was outstanding on the hill for Babson, going eight innings and giving up just three runs - only two of which were earned - and striking out six whiel shouldering the tough-luck defeat. Junior Jeff Browne came on and pitched a scoreless ninth for the Beavers, while senior captain Peter O'Toole, first-year Chris Kucher, and senior captain Brian Scanlon each recorded two hits to pace the offense.

The Babson College baseball team opened its 2010 season in Florida on Saturday, as the Beavers lost a close contest to Roger Williams University, 9-8. The two squads played a single nine-inning game rather than their originally scheduled double-header due to limited field availability following Friday's rainouts. Senior lefty Michael O'Brien started and went six strong innings on the hill for the Beavers, giving up three runs on nine hits and striking out 10. Offensively, Babson had four players with two hits apiece, including senior Jake Bartlett, who went 2-for-4 with 2 runs and an RBI. Senior Peter O'Toole went 2-for-5 with a run, an RBI, and a stolen base, sophomore Travis Jonasson went 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI, and first-year Conor Kortmann went 2-for-5 in his collegiate debut.

2010 Season Preview: Baseball
After claiming the NEWMAC Championship and the program's first-ever win in the NCAA Division III Tournament last spring, the Babson College baseball team has high hopes for 2010. Led by eighth-year head coach Matt Noone (158-122, .564) and senior tri-captains Dave Ahern, Peter O'Toole, and Brian Scanlon, the Beavers will look post the program's fourth straight 20-win season and the seventh in the last nine years.

Babson Athletes Give Back This Fall
This fall the Babson athletic teams not only performed on the field and in the classroom, but they also gave back to the community in many different ways. Several teams participated in community service events that benefited many organizations including the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and the Jimmy Fund. “I’m extremely proud of everything our athletes have done and continue to do within the community,” said Director of Athletics Josh MacArthur. “These young men and women have tremendous demands on their time and energy, and yet they still make the effort to give back in whatever way they can. They genuinely thrive on touching the lives of others, and in doing so they serve as wonderful ambassadors for Babson College and our athletics program.”
