BABSON PARK, Mass. – Senior righthander Rew Wilson (Niantic, Conn.) struck out a season-high 11 as part of a complete-game three-hitter to lead the visiting Plymouth State University Panthers to a 6-1 victory over the host Babson College Beavers in a non-conference baseball contest at Govoni Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Babson (6-4) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth, as senior Trevor Boyce (Canton, Mass.) reached on an error, moved to third on a double to left by senior Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass.), and scored on a an RBI-groundout to second by sophomore Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.). However, that unearned run would be all Wilson would allow the rest of the way, as he retired 16 of the final 18 batters that he faced to secure the win.
In all, Wilson surrendered just three hits and walked one while striking out 11 in nine innings of work. For the Beavers, first-year Hunter Silva (Bourne, Mass.) went 6 1/3 and gave up three earned runs on three hits, walked five and fanned six. The rookie righty took a no-hitter into the top of the sixth before surrendering an RBI-single by Panthers' junior Jeff Runnals (Wolfeboro, N.H.), which at the time gave Plymouth State a 2-1 lead. The knockout blow then came in the seventh, when the visitors tacked on three runs on three hits, a pair of walks, and two errors to build a 5-1 advantage.
MacPhee, Kucher, and senior John Botelho (Tempe, Ariz.) recorded one hit apiece for Babson, while sophomore Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) had two hits and Runnals drove in two runs for Plymouth State.
