Baseball Shuts Down Mass. Maritime, 5-0

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass.—Junior Teddy Carey (Upton, Mass.) allowed just one hit over seven innings and classmates Adam Ayala (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and David Lennon (Windermere, Fla.) each drove in a pair of runs as visiting Babson College defeated Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 5-0, in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

With the win, Babson evened its record at 2-2 on the year, while Mass. Maritime slips to 2-1.

Carey struck out five and walked four while allowing just a leadoff single in the first to move to 2-0 on the year. Junior Matt Cuneo (Ashland, Mass.) struck out the side in the ninth to wrap up the Beavers' two-hit shutout.

Ayala and senior Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) both finished with two hits, while Lennon and sophomore Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio) both doubled in the win. Sophomore Connor Gill (Sterling, Mass.) and first-year Sean Harrington (Walpole, Mass.) each singled and scored a pair of runs for Babson.

The Green and White took the lead with a pair of two-out runs in the top of the second. Gill and Harrington worked back-to-back walks and Lennon followed with a double to right center on a 3-2 pitch to make it 2-0.

The Beavers stranded a pair of runners in both the fourth and fifth innings before adding to their lead on Harrington's one-out single to center in the sixth. Babson put together another two-out rally in the eighth, taking advantage of two walks and an error to plate a pair of runs on Ayala's single to left.

First-year Andrew Auld (Wakefield, Mass.) started and allowed two runs on two hits over two innings to fall to 1-1 on the year for the Buccaneers, who used six pitchers on the day.

Babson returns to action on March 17 when it takes on Illinois Wesleyan in Clermont, Fla., at 4 p.m., while Mass. Maritime is scheduled to host Newbury on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
