Men's Basketball Ranked Second in The Sporting News Preseason Poll

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Following its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance last March, the Babson College men's basketball team was ranked second in the Division III poll when The Sporting News released its 2016-17 College Basketball Preview last week.

One of just three programs to reach the third round of the national tournament in each of the last two seasons, the Beavers return all five starters and 11 players after going 23-6 last winter. Senior Joey Flannery (Acton, Mass.) averaged 23.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists to earn National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III Player of the Year honors as the Green and White surpassed 20 wins for the third year in a row.

Babson finished just behind top-ranked Amherst, which knocked the Beavers out of last year's NCAA Tournament on its way to reaching the Final Four. Wisconsin-Whitewater came in third, while Christopher Newport (Va.) and St. Norbert (Wis.) rounded out the top five. North Central (Ill.), Marietta (Ohio), Williams, Hardin-Simmons (Texas) and Lycoming (Pa.) claimed spots 6-10 in the poll.

In addition to the lofty national ranking, Flannery was named to the Division III preseason All-American team, while senior Isaiah Nelsen (North Andover, Mass.), who averaged 16.0 points and 8.6 boards last season, was tabbed as an honorable mention All-American.

Babson opens the 2016-17 campaign on November 15 against Albertus Magnus at Staake Gymnasium.
