BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Jack Coolahan (Newtown, Pa.) scored a game-high 18 points and sophomore Beau Smith (Germantown, N.Y.) contributed a career-high 17 points to lead five players in double figures as Babson College opened the season with a 99-60 win over Anna Maria College in the opening round of the 34th Babson Invitational Tournament on Saturday inside Staake Gymnasium.
Junior Andrew Jaworski (Tolland, Conn.) scored 16 points, senior Frank Oftring (North Attleboro, Mass.) added 13 points and six rebounds, and junior Crew Ainge (Wellesley, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points, five boards, three assists and two steals for the Beavers. Smith went 6-of-8 from the floor and tied for team-high honors with six rebounds.
Junior Ralph Grasso Jr. (Marlborough, Mass.) scored 10 of his team-high 15 points in the first half, while senior Bobby Perette (Marshfield, Mass.) added 14 points for the Amcats. Classmate Mike Rapoza (Charlton, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in the loss.
Leading 35-31 late in the first half, the Green and White rattled off a 13-5 run that included eight points from Jaworski and a three-pointer by Smith to extend the margin to 48-36 at the half. Babson (1-0) scored on six of its first eight possessions to begin in the second half, stretching its lead to 63-40 on the third triple of the period by Coolahan with 15:50 remaining.
Smith scored eight consecutive points to make it 79-53 with 7:30 to play, and the Beavers ended the game with a 13-0 run that included buckets from four different players over the final 3:25 of the contest.
Babson shot 56.7 percent in the first half and 53.7 percent for the game, while outrebounding Anna Maria 37-29. The Amcats (0-1) shot 55.2 percent over the first 20 minutes but connected on just 8-of-30 shots (26.7 percent) in the second half.
Both teams return to action on Sunday as Babson hosts Suffolk at 2 p.m., while Anna Maria takes on Salem State at 4 p.m.
