• Babson Golf To Join New England Collegiate Conference

    The Babson College men’s golf program has been accepted as an associate member of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC), Director of Athletics Josh MacArthur and NECC Commissioner Del Malloy announced on Friday. Babson’s first season in the conference will be this coming fall. Boasting a tremendous history, the Beavers’ golf team won seven consecutive conference titles from 1997 to 2003 – one in the Constitution Athletic Conference and six more in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference. However, Babson has been without a conference since the NEWMAC ceased its sponsorship of the sport after the 2003-04 season.
  • Pineres Wins JWU Spring Invitational As Golf Finishes Second

    Babson College junior co-captain Fernando Pineres (Cartagena, Colombia) finished first out of 68 golfers to earn medalist honors at the 2009 Johnson and Wales University Spring Invitational on Sunday. With Pineres leading the charge, Babson capped off its 2008-09 season with a second-place finish out of 13 schools behind only event winner NYU. For the second straight day, Pineres fired a round of 73 to preserve the two-shot lead he held after Saturday's opening 18 holes. The Beavers' junior captain finished with a total score of 146 (+4) - two strokes better than runner-up David Su of NYU. It was the first victory of the season for Pineres, whose previous top finishes included a second-place effort at Trinity and a fourth-place showing at Williams earlier this year.

    After carding a 73 on day one of the two-day Johnson and Wales University Spring Invitational Golf Tournament, Babson College junior co-captain Fernando Pineres (Cartagena, Colombia) stood in first place out of 67 total competitors. With Pineres leading the way, the Beavers were in second place as a team, five strokes off the leading pace set by NYU. Thanks to his two-over 73, Pineres holds a two-shot lead heading into Sunday's final round. Peter Taylor of Wesleyan and Alex Hopson of NYU were tied for second with rounds of 75, with two other golfers sitting back within four shots of the lead.

    The Babson College golf team placed fourth overall at the 10-team Western New England College Invitational at the Veterans Golf Course on Thursday. The Beavers' team score of 321 was five strokes behind third-place Tufts University and 13 shots off the winning pace set by Nichols College. Junior co-captain Fernando Pineres (Cartagena, Colombia) and first-year Kyle Klempner (Saddle River, N.J.) led Babson with matching rounds of 79, placing them in a tie for 11th place overall.
  • Golf Finishes 10th At UMass-Dartmouth Tournament

    The Babson College golf team finished 10th overall at the 2009 Hampton Inn Classic hosted by UMass-Dartmouth this weekend. The Beavers posted a two-day score of 514 in the tournament, which was shorted to 27 holes by rain. Anchoring the Babson lineup were junior captain Fernando Pineres and sophomore Bryan Eger, who finished in a tie for 11th place with matching scores of 119. Sophomore Matt Doherty came in 46th with a 27-hole total of 135, while first-year Matias Sevi placed 60th with a score of 141.
  • Golf Places 12th at Lou Flumere Tournament

    The Babson College golf team participated in the Lou Flumere Tournament hosted by Bentley College on Wednesday afternoon. The Beavers placed 12th out of 20 teams with a team score of 334. Sophomore Matt Foley (East Longmeadow, Mass.) led the Beavers shooting 80 on the day placing him 21st. Sophomore Bryan Eger (Marion, Mass.) shot an 83 to place him 37th and junior Fernando Pineres (Cartagena, Columbia) placed 43rd shooting an 84. Sophomore Matt Doherty rounded out the group shooting an 87 and placing 64th overall.
  • Sunday Surge Helps Golf Place Ninth At Babson Spring Opener

    The Babson College golf team took 20 strokes off its opening round performance to finish ninth overall in its own 2009 Babson Golf Spring Opener at Atlantic Country Club on Sunday. Salem State College posted a team score of 303 to overcome a three-stroke deficit and win the event with a two-day total of 621. Nichols College was four strokes back at 625, while Western new England College placed third with a score of 641. Junior co-captain Fernando Pineres recorded the Beavers’ top finish, shooting 77 in the second round to tie for 15th overall with a 160. Sophomore Matt Foley added a stellar round of 78 to tie for 29th place with a 166, while sophomore Matt Doherty and senior co-captain Harrison Epstein finished in a tie for 47th with matching totals of 174. Although he did not earn an official final score due to a DQ on Saturday, sophomore Bryan Eger aided the Beavers by breaking into the team’s top four with a round of 80 on Sunday.

    The Babson College golf team kicked off the second half of its 2008-09 season with its own Babson Spring Opener at Atlantic Country Club on Saturday. After the first day of the two-day competition, the Beavers stood in 11th place out of 14 squads with a team score of 342. Pacing the Beavers were junior co-captain Fernando Pineres (Cartagena, Colombia), who carded an opening round 83 to place 26th, and sophomore Matt Doherty (Tuckahoe, N.Y.), who was close behind in 31st with a round of 84. Senior co-captain Harrison Epstein (Pennington, N.J.) added an 87 to place 43rd, and sophomore Matt Foley () placed 48th with an 88.
  • Golf Rebounds With Solid Day Two At NEIGA Championships

    The Babson College golf team rebounded from a tough opening round with a much-improved day two on Tuesday, as the Beavers finished in a tie for 33rd place at the 74th annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships at the Captain's Golf Course. After a team score of 354 on Monday, Babson bounced back with a 332 in the second round to finish even with Amherst College at 686 overall. Sophomore Bryan Eger (Marion, Mass.) and first-year Kyle Klempner (Saddle River, N.J.) both shot rounds of 80 on Tuesday, as Eger finished 72nd overall with a two-round total of 161 and Klempner came in 116th with a 167. Junior co-captain Fernando Pineres (Cartagena, Columbia) carded an 85 on day two to finish 175th overall with a 177, and sophomore Matt Doherty (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) placed 188th after Tuesday's round of 87 gave him a total score of 181.

    The Babson College golf team struggled on day one of the 74th annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships at the Captain's Golf Course Monday, as the Beavers' team score of 354 put them in a tie for 36th place overall. Sophomore Bryan Eger (Marion, Mass.) led Babson on the first day of the two-day tourney, as he fired an 81 to rank 54th out of 214 total competitors. First-year Kyle Klempner (Saddle River, N.J.) shot an opening round 87 to place 137th midway through the tourney, while junior co-captain Fernando Pineres (Cartagena, Columbia) and sophomore Matt Doherty (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) carded rounds of 92 and 94, respectively.

    Babson College sophomore Bryan Eger (Marion, Mass.) finished third out of 85 competitors to help the Beavers' golf team take seventh place at the 2008 ECAC Division III New England Golf Championships at Tunxis Plantation Golf Course on Sunday. Babson's team total of 618 was just one stroke behind sixth-place Brandeis and 36 off the winning pace set by tournament champion Trinity. For the second straight day, Eger carded a round of 72 to finish with a two-day total of 144, placing him third behind gold medalist Jay Driscoll of Trinity (140) and silver medalist Pasquale Pio of Nichols (141). Junior co-captain Fernando Pineres (Cartagena, Colombia) finished 22nd overall with a two-round score of 153, while sophomore Matt Foley (East Longmeadow, Mass.) came in 39th with a 159.

Sophomore Bryan Eger (Marion, Mass.) also shot a 77 on Sunday to finish at 159 overall - good for 59th place, and first-year Kyle Klempner (Saddle River, N.J.) came in 74th with a two-round total of 163.

Also scoring for the Beavers were first-year Kyle Klempner (Saddle River, N.J.), who tied for 65th overall with an 81, sophomore Bryan Eger (Marion, Mass.), who tied for 71st with an 82, sophomore Matt Doherty (Tuckahoe, N.Y.), who tied for 88th with an 85, and sophomore Matt Foley, who placed 103rd with a 92.

    It was a tough second round for the Babson men's golf team at the 2008 Duke Nelson Invitational at Middlebury on Sunday, as the Beavers finished 16th overall in the 22-team competition. Babson, which was tied for ninth coming into the day, was led by junior co-captain Fernando Pineres (Cartagena, Columbia), who shot 81 on Sunday to finish 30th overall with a combined score of 155, and sophomore Matt Foley (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who carded a low round of 80 on day two to move up to 50th overall with a 159.

Sophomore Matt Foley (East Longmeadow, Mass.) added a round of 79 to place 57th, and sophomore Matt Doherty (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) rounded out the Beavers' scorers with an 82, placing him 88th overall.

    The Babson golf team kicked off its season with a brilliant performance at the Trinity Inivitational over the weekend, as the Beavers placed second out of seven squads. Babson's two-round total of 606 was just three strokes shy of first-place Nichols. Junior Fernando Pineres (Cartagena, Columbia), sophomore Matt Foley (East Longmeadow, Mass.), and first-year Kyle Klempner all finished in the top ten for Babson. Pineres placed second overall with a two-round total of 149 - four strokes off the winning pace set by Nichols' Pasquale Pio. Foley was close behind in fourth with a score of 150, and Klempner carded a total of 151 to place sixth in his collegiate debut.

    Despite the loss of talented linkster Travis Dewire '08 to graduation, the Babson College golf team will feature plenty of outstanding returners this fall as the Beavers look to remain one of the top programs in the region. Leading the squad this year will be junior Fernando Pineres (Cartagena, Colombia) and sophomore Bryan Eger (Hopkinton, Mass.). Pineres posted the team's top finish in three events last season, including a second-place performance at the WNEC Invitational and a third-place effort at the Babson Spring Opener. Eger finished either first or second on the team five times a year ago, including the Beavers' top score at Bentley, Johnson and wales, and MIT.
