WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Thanks to a magnificent opening round by senior captain Wesley Tryhane, the Babson College golf team bounced back from two dissapointing outings to rank second out of 17 schools after day one at the Williams Invitational on Saturday.
The Beavers, who placed ninth at the season-opening Trinity Invitation in early September and then took 18th at the Duke Nelson last weekend, will look to post their best finish so far this fall when the tournament concludes with Sunday's second round beginning at 7:30 a.m.
A GCAA Academic All-American last season, Tryhane returned to form with his best round so far this year - a two-over 73 which placed him atop the leaderboard at the tournament's midway point. He was followed by first-year Vijay Vasandani, who ranked 18th with an opening-round 78, and junior Kenny Chong, who came in 28th with a 79. Senior Paul Caso rounded out the Beavers' scoring four in 44th place with a round of 81, and first-year Chris Maguire carded an 84 to place 61st after day one.
Babson's first-round team score of 298 was two ahead of third-place Trinity and six off the leading pace set by host Williams' 'A' squad. The Ephs' unofficial 'B' team also played well on Saturday, matching the Beavers' score of 298.
