MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—Junior Vijay Vasandani (Cebu, Philippines) shot a 6-over par 77 to help the Babson College men's golf team to a team score of 330 in the opening round of the Duke Nelson Invitational at Ralph Myhre Golf Course on the campus of Middlebury College on Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers sit in a tie for 14th place with Amherst College, Nichols College and Western New England University on the 6,376 yard, par-71 layout. The host Panthers, who posted a team score of 305, sit atop the leaderboard after the opening round, four shots clear of second-place RPI, and eight shots better than the University of Rochester.
Vasandani, who came in third overall at the Trinity College Invitational last weekend, was followed by sophomore Bobby Quirk (East Greenwich, R.I.), who fired an 11-over par 82, and senior Jay Ruvane (Buck Hill Falls, Pa.), who posted a round of 83 on Saturday. Junior Chris Maguire (Waltham, Mass.) shot an opening-round 88, while first-year Ian Notkin (Caldwell, N.J.) carded an 89.
Babson will open final round play at Middlebury on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
