CRANSTON, R.I.—Junior Chris Maguire (Waltham, Mass.) shot an 8-over par 79 and the Babson College men's golf team posted a team score of 321, its lowest of the spring, to tie for the 11th place after the opening round of the Johnson & Wales Invitational at Cranston Country Club on Saturday afternoon.
Tufts University finished with a team score of 300 and holds a five shot lead over second-place Middlebury College. Salem State University sits seven shots back at 307, while Williams College (308) and Manhattanville College (312) are fourth and fifth, respectively, on the par-71, 6,495-yard layout.
Maguire is tied for 30th overall, while first-years Pranav Mohan (Fremont, Calif.) and Kyle Alexander (Brewer, Maine) are tied for 41st position after both shooting 80 on Saturday. Classmate Andrew Neal (Chevy Chase, Md.) carded an opening-round 82, and junior Vijay Vasandani (Cebu, Philippines) rounded out the squad with a first-round 85.
The Beavers will get the final round underway at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
