BROOKLINE, Mass.—First-year Riley Whitham (Harvard, Mass.) carded a 1-under par 70 and finished second overall as the Babson College men's golf team opened the 2015 season with a second-place finish at the Newbury Kickoff Classic at Brookline Golf Club at Putterham on Thursday afternoon.
The Beavers posted a team score of 303 to finish just two shots behind Castleton University. Endicott College came in third with a total of 304, while Elms College (335) and Newbury College (350) came in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Senior Vijay Vasandani (Cebu, Philippines) shot a 4-over par 75 tie for fifth place on the 6,302-yard layout. Sophomore Kyle Alexander (Brewer, Maine) tied for ninth after shooting 78 and classmate Ian Notkin (Caldwell, N.J.) shot 80 to tie for 13th position. Babson, which also had a pair of players competing as individuals, got a 78 from sophomore Andrew Neal (Chevy Chase, Md.) and a 79 from classmate Dan Young (Westwood, Mass.).
Whitham made three birdies and two bogeys to finish one shot behind Castleton's Zachary Temple, who earned medalist honors with a 2-under par round of 69. Whitham was also the only player in the 27-player field to play the par 4's under par.
Babson returns to action on Saturday, September 19, when it heads north to compete in the Duke Nelson Invitational on the campus of Middlebury College.
• Whitham's round was the first under par by a Babson golfer since Vasandani posted a 3-under 69 in the first round of the NECC Championship in 2013.
• The Beavers' team score of 303 was their best since posting a 298 in the first round of the Williams Invitational on September 22, 2012.
• Neal led the team and tied for tournament-high honors with four birdies on the afternoon.
• Vasandani was one of just two players to finish under par on the 5's.
