EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass.—Sophomores Kyle Alexander (Brewer, Maine) and Ian Notkin (Caldwell, N.J.) both finished at 5-over par 75 as the Babson College men's golf team posted a team score of 304 and sits in second place after the first round of the Elms Blazer Invitational at Elmcrest Country Club on Saturday.
The Beavers trail Occidental College by seven strokes entering the final round and are two shots clear of third-place Salem State University (306) and three ahead of fourth-place UMass-Dartmouth. Endicott College (309) rounds out the top five and is one of seven teams within 14 shots of the lead heading into Sunday.
Notkin led all players with five birdies on Saturday and sits in a tie for eighth place along with Alexander, who made a team-high 12 pars. First-year Riley Whitham (Harvard, Mass.) is tied for 15th position after firing a 6-over 76, classmate Benjamin Crawford (Houston, Texas) carded a 78 and is tied for 24th place, and sophomore Pranav Mohan (Fremont, Calif.) shot a 79 and is tied for 32nd.
Babson, which owns three seconds place finishes in its first three events this season, will open final-round play at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
