WARWICK, R.I.—First-year Riley Whitham (Harvard, Mass.) carded a 6-over par 78, and the Babson College men's golf team sits in ninth place after opening with a team score of 324 at the Rhode Island College Invitational on Friday at Valley Country Club.
Despite shooting its highest team score of the year, the Beavers sit just nine strokes behind the host Anchormen, which lead a tightly-packed leaderboard with a team total of 315. Worcester State (317), UMass Dartmouth (318), Nichols (319) and Johnson & Wales (320) round out the top five, while Manhattanville, Endicott and the Rhode Island College 'B' team are tied for sixth, one spot ahead of the Green and White.
Whitham is tied for ninth place overall and will enter Saturday's final round just three strokes off the lead. Sophomore Pranav Mohan (Fremont, Calif.) was even par over his final nine holes to finish tied for 22nd with an 8-over par round of 80 on the 6,458-yard layout.
Babson returns to Valley C.C. for the final round on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
