WEST BOYLSTON, Mass. - Sophomore Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.) opened with a 3-under par 69 and first-year Reed Wilson (Redlands, Calif.) carded a 2-under 70 to help the Babson College men's golf team take a big step towards winning its fourth consecutive New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) title at the first round of the conference championship at Wachusett Country Club on Saturday.
The Beavers posted a team score of 2-under par 286 to build a 26-shot lead over second-place Springfield (312). Elms is in third place after finishing with a day one total of 324.
Bornhorst, the reigning NECC Golfer and Rookie of the Year, made five birdies and will enter Sunday's final round one shot clear of Wilson, who carded three birdies on Saturday. Sophomore Martin Jensen (Bronxvile, N.Y) is third after firing a 1-over 73, while first-year Lane Bohman (Chatham, Mass.) is tied for fourth at 2-over after signing for a first round 74. Sophomore Lukas Linemayr (Hampton, N.H), who shot a 4-over 76, is tied for sixth place.
Final round play at Wachusett CC begins on Sunday at 11 a.m.
