BREWSTER, Mass.—Sophomore Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.) shot a 2-over par 74 for the Babson College men's golf team, which sits in third place after the opening round of the 83rd New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship at the Captains Golf Course.
The Beavers posted a team total of 305 on the 6,724 yard, par 72 Port Course. Husson owns the first round lead with a score of 298, while Rhode Island College is second at 303. Western New England (306) and Endicott (308) round of the top five on a tightly-packed leaderboard that features nine teams within 14 shots of the lead.
Bornhorst is one of three players tied for sixth position five shots in back of Daulton Wickenden of Husson, who fired a 3-under 69 on Sunday. Senior Kyle Alexander (Brewer, Maine), junior Riley Witham (Harvard, Mass.) and first-year Lane Bohman (Chatham, Mass.) are all tied for 20th place after opening with rounds of 5-over 77.
First-year Reed Wilson (Redlands, Calif.) also carded an opening round 82 for the Green and White.
Babson, which rallied from a four-shot first round deficit to win its first NEIGA Championship since 2000 last fall, will begin final round play on the Starboard Course on Monday at 10 a.m.
• The Beavers have been no worse than third after the first round in each of their last four NEIGA Championship appearances.
• Bornhorst, who was the Division III medalist the 2016 NEIGA Championship, has shot no worse than 75 in any of his three competitive rounds at the Captains Course over the last two years.
• Sunday's first round score of 305 tied for the lowest team score at the NEIGA Championship going back to 2008.
