The Babson College men's golf team opens its spring season at the two-day Rhode Island College Invitational beginning on Friday morning at Valley Country Club in Warwick, R.I. The Beavers have not finished higher than third on the par-72, 6,458-yard track going back to 2013.
2017 RIC INVITATIONAL RECAP
Junior Riley Whitham shot a 3-over par 75 to help the Beavers come in third at last year's event, which was postponed on March 31-April 1 and later shortened to a one-day event on April 14, 2017. Sophomore Martin Jensen was one shot behind him in seventh place after shooting a 76 to help the Green and White finish with a team score of 310, 10 shots in back of first-place Western New England.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
Babson begins the spring following a third-place showing at the NEIGA Championship back in late October. Sophomore Chris Bornhorst tied for fifth with a 36-hole total of 4-over par 148, while senior Kyle Alexander and sophomore Lane Bohman both tied for 14th at 7-over after posting matching rounds of 77-74. Bornhorst leads the team with a 74.00 scoring average, Bohman has three top-10 results and a 74.30 stroke average, and Jensen is third in scoring at 75.17 with a pair of even-par rounds.
LOOKING TO GO LOW
The Beavers, who finished the fall portion of their schedule with a 299.67 team average, did not break 300 last spring and finished with a 310.80 stroke average in 10 rounds. Babson's lowest score of last spring was 303 in a third-place finish at the Western New England Invitational on April 20.
In addition to this weekend's event, the Green and White will play in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational next Friday and Saturday, Bentley's one-day, 36-hole tournament in Newport, R.I., on April 18, and will travel to the Tim Brown Invitational hosted by Skidmore in Ballston Spa, N.Y., on April 21-22.
