BALLSTON SPA, N.Y.—Sophomore Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.) fired a 1-under par 70 and the Babson College men's golf team sits just two shots off the lead after round one at the Tim Brown Invitational at Ballston Spa Country Club.
The Beavers' team score of 306 is the best among Division III schools and just two behind Division II St. Thomas Aquinas. Rensselaer is third at 307, while Skidmore (316) and Clarkson (317) round out the top five following the first round.
Bornhorst, who had it to 3-under through 13 holes, made six birdies and owns a two-stroke lead over Michael Miranda of St. Thomas Aquinas. Senior Kyle Alexander (Brewer, Maine) had an eagle and one birdie on his front nine and sits in a tie for sixth place after finishing with a 5-over par 76 on Saturday.
Junior Riley Whitham (Harvard, Mass.), who is tied for 19th place, settled for a 8-over 79 after making a triple bogey on his final hole of the day, while first-year Lane Bohman (Chatham, Mass.) and senior Pranav Mohan (Fremont, Calif.) both shot 81 and are tied for 37th position.
First-year Reed Wilson (Redlands, Calif.), who is competing as an individual this weekend, made three birdies on the front nine and is one of eight players tied for 11th place at 7-over after shooting an opening round 78.
Babson will begin final round play off the first tee on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
• Bornhorst led the field in birdies, par-4 scoring (E) and par-5 scoring (-3) on Saturday.
• Alexander was one of five players in the 80-man field to record an eagle in the first round.
• Saturday's round was the third straight and fifth overall this season at even-par or better for Bornhorst.
