NEWINGTON, Conn.—Junior Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.) fired a 1-under par 71 and the Babson College men's golf team sits in second place after round one of the Trinity College Bill Detrick Invitational at Indian Hill Country Club.
The Beavers team score of 300 is 11 shots behind the host Bantams, who posted a 1-over par total of 289 in the opening round. Tufts University is third at 301, while Amherst College is fourth at 304.
Bornhorst is one of two players just one shot behind first-round leader Will Rosenfield of Trinity, who opened with a 2-under par 70. Senior Riley Whitham (Harvard, Mass.) and first-year Nicholas Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) are tied for 15th place at 4-over par after shooting 76 on Saturday, while senior Benjamin Crawford (Houston, Texas) posted a 5-over 77 and is tied for a share of 20th position.
Babson returns to the course for the final round on Sunday at 12 p.m.
• The Beavers' team score of 300 is their lowest in five rounds at Indian Hill CC and the best since posting 297 in the opening round of the 2010 event at Pine Valley Golf Course in Southington, Conn.
• Bornhorst has now finished at level par or better in six consecutive rounds going back to last spring.
• Both Gianelos and Rabin made their collegiate debuts on Saturday.
