WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.—Sophomore Lane Bohman (Chatham, Mass.) shot a 1-over par 72 to help the Babson College men's golf team end round one at the Williams College Invitational in second place.
The Beavers' opening round total of 303 is seven strokes behind the host Ephs, who posted 296 and were the only squad to break 300 at Taconic Golf Club on Saturday. Tufts University is in third place at 304, Husson University is fourth at 305 and St. John Fisher College rounds out the top five at 307.
Bohman and Beau David of Williams are tied for second place on the individual leaderboard, three shots off the pace of the Ephs' Sam Goldenring, who carded a 2-under 69 in the first round. Bohman led all players with 15 pars on Saturday.
First-year Nicholas Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.), who made four birdies in his opening round, and senior Riley Whitham (Harvard, Mass.) both shot 76 in round one and are two of 11 players tied for 12th position at 5-over par. Junior Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.) and first-year Burt Gesner (Severna Park, Md.) both shot 79 and are tied for 36th place at 8-over.
Babson returns to Taconic GC on Sunday at 9 a.m. to begin final round play.
• The Beavers' 303 total on Saturday is their best opening round score since posting 298 on the way to finishing third back in 2012.
• Over his last 72 holes, which includes the final day of competition at Trinity on September 9 and last weekend's event at Middlebury, Bohman is just 2-over par.
