Bornhorst Shoots Final Round 70, Wilson Makes Hole-in-One as Beavers Edge Trinity on Tiebreaker for Second Consecutive Tournament Victory
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Junior Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.) shot 2-under par, sophomore Reed Wilson (Redlands, Calif.) made a hole-in-one and the Babson College men's golf team overcame a four-shot deficit to win the Saratoga National Invitational at Saratoga National Golf Course on Sunday afternoon.
The Beavers, who opened the day four strokes behind overnight leader Middlebury, closed with a 4-over par total of 292 to finish at 14-over 590 for the weekend. The Green and White finished in a tie atop the leaderboard with Trinity, who shot 293 on Sunday, but edged the Bantams on a tiebreaker for its second consecutive tournament victory.
Rensselaer posted a final round total of 294 and finished third at 16-over 592, Middlebury was fourth at 595 and Williams rounded out the top five with a 36-hole total of 600.
After shooting 74 in Saturday's first round, Bornhorst made the turn at 1-over on Sunday before making an eagle on the par-5 10th hole. He bogeyed No. 11 but followed with birdies at the 14th and 17th to match his low round of the fall (70) and tie for fourth place overall at even-par 144.
First-year Nicholas Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) followed up his first round 71 with a 5-over 77 on Sunday to grab a share of seventh place overall and 4-over 148. He was picked up by junior Riley Whitham (Harvard, Mass.) and sophomore Lane Bohman (Chatham, Mass.), who shot 73 and 74, respectively, in the final round.
Following an opening round 77, Whitham made four birdies over his first 14 holes on Sunday on the way to carding a 1-over 73 for a share of 11th position at 6-over 150. Bohman birdied four of the first 10 holes on the way to shooting a 2-over 74 that also left him in a tie for 11th overall at 6-over for the weekend.
Wilson, who made his season debut after returning from injury on Saturday, shot a 3-over 75 that was highlighted by his hole-in-one on the 199-yard par-3 12th hole. He followed it up with a birdie on No. 13 and finished in a tie for 30th place with a 36-hole total of 14-over 158.
Babson wraps up its fall schedule next Sunday and Monday at the 84th annual NEIGA Championship. Play will begin at The Captains Golf Course in Brewster, Mass., on Sunday at 10 a.m.
• Babson owns two victories and five top-five finishes in five events this fall. Additionally, the Beavers have recorded 13 straight top-five showings in 36-hole events dating back to last September.
• The Green and White owns a 293.5 stroke average over its last four rounds.
• Bornhorst has broken par three times and finished at level par on two other occasions in his first 10 rounds this fall.
• Sunday's 292 team score is the Beavers' lowest in a final round this season.
