BREWSTER, Mass.—Despite posting its highest team score of fall, the 22nd-ranked Babson College men's golf team is just three shots off the lead after the first round of the 84th Annual NEIGA Championship at The Captains Golf Course on Sunday.
The Beavers score of 313 has them in second place behind Williams, which shot 310 on day one. Husson is third at 314, Middlebury is fourth at 315 and Western New England and Nichols are tied for fifth just seven shots back at 317. In all, nine teams will begin Monday's final round within nine shots of the lead.
First-year Nicholas Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) recorded the low round of the day for the Green and White, finishing with a 3-over par 75 that has him in a tie for third place just two shots off the pace of Worcester State's Jacob Poitras and Middlebury's Reid Buzby, who both shot 73 and sit at 1-over.
Junior Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.) opened with a 6-over 78 and is tied for 17th position, while first-year Burt Gesner (Severna Park, Md.) and sophomore Lane Bohman (Chatham, Mass.) both shot 80 and are part of a group tied for 33rd position at 8-over par. Senior Riley Whitham (Harvard, Mass.) is in a tie for 73rd after signing for an 85 on Sunday.
The Beavers will begin final round play at The Captains Course on Monday at 8:30 a.m.
• Sunday's 313 total is Babson's highest score at The Captains Course since posting 319 in the final round of the 2015 event.
• Gianelos' has finished with a score of 75 or better in seven of 11 rounds this fall.
• The Beavers entered this year's tournament having recorded four straight top-three results at The Captains Course.
