BLOOMFIELD, N.J.—Sophomore Nicholas Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) opened with an even-par round of 71 and 22nd-ranked Babson College posted a team score of 12-over par 296 to grab a 12 shot lead over the host Violets after the first round of the NYU Invitational at Forest Hill Field Club on Saturday.
NYU (308) is well ahead of third-place Stevens (324) and fourth-place UMass Dartmouth (325), while New Jersey City rounds out the top five with a first-day team score of 335.
Gianelos is tied atop the individual leaderboard with NYU's Joey Burlison, while Beavers' junior Chris Bornhorst (West Newtown, Mass.) is just two shots back after carding a 2-over 73 on Saturday. Sophomore Lane Bohman (Chatham, Mass.) is four shots back in fourth after shooting an opening round 75, while senior Riley Whitham (Harvard, Mass.) and first-year Burt Gesner (Severna Park, Md.) are part of a three-way tie for sixth at 6-over after shooting 77.
Junior Martin Jensen (Bronxville, N.Y.), who is competing as an individual for Babson, is in 10th place after firing a 7-over 78 in round one.
The Beavers return to the course for the final round beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
