BROOKLINE, Mass.—Babson College rising senior Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.) suffered a 7 and 5 loss to third-seeded Chris Francouer (Amesbury, Mass.) of the University of Rhode Island in the first round of match play at the 111th Massachusetts Amateur Championship on Wednesday morning at The Country Club.
All square after four holes, Bornhorst found himself 4-down heading to the 10th tee. Bornhorst fell behind with a bogey at the par-4 fifth hole and Francouer made birdies at the par-4 sixth and par-4 ninth holes to extend his advantage. After halving the 10th, Francouer won 11 and 12 with consecutive birdies before closing out the match on the 13th green.
Bornhorst, who was making his fourth consecutive appearance at the Massachusetts Amateur Championship, qualified for match play for the second consecutive summer with a 36-hole total of 5-over par. After opening with a 75 on Monday, he birdied two of his final three holes to secure one of 32 spots in match play with a round of 72 on the historic Brookline course that has played host to the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur and the 1997 Ryder Cup.
A three-time Golf Coaches Association of America (CGAA)/PING all-region selection and 2018 Division III All-America honorable mention selection, Bornhorst and his Babson teammates will open the season at Trinity College's Bill Detrick Invitational on September 7.
