WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.—Senior Chris Bornhorst (West Newtown, Mass.) shot an opening round 74 as the Babson College men's golf team sits in sixth place after the first round of the Williams Invitational at Taconic Golf Club.
NYU, which is coming off a victory at Middlebury's Duke Nelson Invitational last weekend, posted a team total of 7-over par 291 and is three shots clear of the host Ephs. After struggling over the first two weekends of competition 17th-ranked Trinity is third at 295, while Rochester sits in fourth place at 298. The Beavers' opening day score of 300 leaves them one shot off the pace of fifth-place Rensselaer (299).
Bornhorst birdied both the ninth and 18th holes and is tied for 14th place at 3-over par. First-year Jackson Rothwell (Victoria, British Columbia) led the Green and White with three birdies on the day and is tied with fellow rookie Sean Fitzgerald (West Newton, Mass.) for 23rd position at 4-over after both shot 75 in the opening round.
Sophomore Nicholas Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) also made three birdies for Babson and is tied for 35th place after carding a 5-over 76, while junior Reed Wilson (Redlands, Calif.) shot an 8-over par 79 in his season debut.
Babson returns to Taconic Golf Club for final round play beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
• The Beavers' four-ball total of 300 is their highest score of the season, but is also the second best over the last seven rounds at Taconic GC.
• In three tournaments this season Babson owns a 293.67 scoring average.
• The Beavers enter Sunday's final round seeking a fourth straight top-five finish at the Williams Invitational.
