Men's Golf Rallies From Nine-Shot Deficit to Capture Williams Invitational Title

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.—Sophomore Nicholas Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) fired a career-best round of 3-under par 68 and senior Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.) closed with a 2-under 69 as the Babson College men's golf team rallied from a nine-shot deficit to win the Williams Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Taconic Golf Club.

Starting the day in sixth place, the Beavers shot the low round of the day (288) and posted a 36-hole total of 588 to finish one shot ahead of Williams. Rochester came in third at 591, first round leader NYU came in fourth at 592 and Rensselaer was fifth at 594.

Gianelos tied for the low round of the day at 68 making five birdies, four of them on the front nine, and two bogeys, while Bornhorst finished with four birdies on two bogeys on the way to his round of 69 on Sunday. Overall, Bornhorst came in fifth with a 36-hole total of 1-over 143, one shot better than Gianelos, who grabbed a share of sixth place at 2-over 144.

First-year Jackson Rothwell (Victoria, British Columbia) followed up Saturday's 74 with a 6-over 77 on Sunday to tie for 33rd position, and junior Reed Wilson (Redlands, Calif.) bounced back from an opening 79 with a 3-over 74 to finish at 11-over, which was good for a share of 35th place. First-year Sean Fitzgerald (West Newton, Mass.) tied for 39th at 12-over 154 after shooting a final round 79.

Babson returns to action on October 7 when it begins first round play at the Royal Lakes-Oglethorpe Invitational in Flowery Branch, Ga.

• The Beavers' victory at Williams marks the first time it has finished better than third at the event going back to the early 1990s.
• Gianelos' round of 68 is the second lowest by a Babson golf at Taconic GC going back to 1992. Fernando Pineres '10 shot a 4-under 67 in the second round of the 2009 tournament.
• The Beavers final round score of 288 is their best at Taconic GC since the final round of the 2009 tournament when the they posted a four-ball total of 286.
• Bornhorst owns three top-five finishes in three events this fall.
