JUPITER, Fla.—Sophomore Nicholas Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) fired a 4-under 68 to help 20th-ranked Babson College build a two-shot lead after round one at The Atlantic Invitational on Monday afternoon at Jupiter Country Club.
The Beavers posted a first round total of 299 to finish two strokes ahead of second-place Allegheny (Pa.), which is currently 29th in the Division III Golfstat rankings. Central (Iowa) is third after recording a 313 total on Monday, while Johnson & Wales rounded out the field at 317.
Gianelos, who is coming off his first victory of the season at the NEIGA Championship on Monday, leads the field by four strokes after shooting 68 for the fourth time in his last seven rounds. Senior Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.) fired a 2-over 74 and is six shots back in a tie for third place, while first-year Spencer Crowe (Lake Forest, Ill.) is in a two-way tie for eighth after carding a 4-over 76 on Monday.
Sophomore Burt Gesner (Severna Park, Md.) is tied for 17th position at 9-over par after shooting a first round 81, and senior Martin Jensen (Bronxville, N.Y.) is tied for 24th place after finishing with a 12-over 84.
Babson begins final round play at 8:54 a.m. on Tuesday.
