Cadets Snap Bavers' 15-Game Unbeaten Streak
BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Felix Brassard (St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec) scored a pair of goals to help No. 1 Norwich University defeat No. 9 Babson College, 4-0, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action on Saturday afternoon inside the Babson Skating Center.
Babson, which had not lost since November 22, slips to 15-4-2 overall and 10-3-1 in conference play after seeing its 15-game unbeaten streak come to an end. Norwich, which is unbeaten over its last 13 contests, improves to 18-2-2 overall and 13-1-1 in the NEHC.
Sophomore goaltender Aidan Murphy (Walpole, Mass.) finished with 22 saves and suffered his first defeat of the year to fall to 9-1-1 for the Beavers.
Sophomore Gabriel Chicoine (St. Dominique, Quebec) finished with a goal and an assist and junior Ryan Boucher (Fitchburg, Mass.) also scored for the Cadets. Senior Jordan Hall (Anchorage, Alaska) led all players with two assists and classmate Tom Aubrun (Chamonix, France) stopped all 23 shots he faced to record his Division III-leading seventh shutout of the year.
Scoreless past the midway point of the second period, Norwich scored twice in a span of just over three minutes to build a 2-0 advantage. With the teams playing 4-on-4, Boucher won an offensive zone faceoff and went behind the net to score on a wraparound shot for his eighth goal of the season at 12:32. Brassard notched the first of his two tallies with a one-timer from the slot off a feed from Chicoine to double the lead at the 15:46 mark.
Brassard struck again, intercepting a pass in the neutral zone and beating a defender before ripping a shot over the shoulder of Murphy for his team-leading 16th goal 3:08 into the third. Lewis capped the scoring for the Cadets at the 8:28 mark when he stuffed home the rebound of a redirection by sophomore Brett Ouderkirk (Mokland, Ontario) for his sixth goal of the year.
Despite being blanked by Aubrun for the second time this season, the Beavers had a pair of quality chances in the second period. Aubrun slid left-to-righ to the top of the blue paint to deny junior Nick Rosa (Birmingham, Mich.) less than five minutes into the stanza, and then was at the right post to snare junior Patrick Flynn's (Framingham, Mass.) rebound attempt after classmate Cooper Norton's (Williston, Vt.) shot from the slot was blocked.
Aubrun also made a pair of saves during a one-minute 4-on-3 power play just after Norwich had taken the lead in the second period.
Babson returns to action next Friday when it travels to Suffolk at 7 p.m., while Norwich visits Castleton on Saturday at 7 p.m.
• The Beavers are now 25-45-7 all-time against Norwich.
• Saturday's loss was just the second over the last six games for Babson against the Cadets inside the Babson Skating Center.
• The Beavers' 15-game unbeaten streak was the program's third longest going back to the early 1980s. The 1982-83 team was unbeaten over its first 18 outings to start the year, while the 2004-05 team went unbeaten over a 16-game stretch.
• The last time Babson had been shutout prior to Saturday came exactly a year ago in a road loss at Hobart.
