NORTHFIELD, Vt. – First-year Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) scored a game-high five goals, and junior Armand Wilson (Fairfield, Conn.) registered three goals as Babson College defeated Norwich University, 14-3, in a Pilgrim League men’s lacrosse game Wednesday afternoon at Howard Field.

Sophomore Cam Caruso (St. Charles, Ill.) chipped in two goals for the Beavers, who jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. First-year James Schmidt (Shelburne, Vt.) posted one goal and a game-high three assists for Babson, while sophomores Kevin Sayet (Miami, Fla.) and TJ Mallon (Manhasset, N.Y.) and junior Tom Cykana (Minnetonka, Minn.) each netted one goal apiece. Sophomore Paul Grip (Shrewsbury) and junior Andrew Packer (Hudson, Ohio) each contributed two assists apiece for the Beavers, while first-year Michael Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.) dished out one helper.

Tyler Nicoll scored one goal and added one assist to lead the way for Norwich (8-5, 1-3 Pilgrim). Kyle Marzeoti and Michael White each tallied one goal apiece, and Justin Pearson was credited with one assist to round out the scoring for the Cadets.

Babson (8-5, 3-1 Pilgrim) took control of the game from the opening faceoff, scoring three times in the first 3:23. The Beavers added three more goals in the opening stanza to open up a 6-1 edge following 15 minutes of action. Patinkin and Wilson each netted a pair of markers in the quarter to set the tone for the day.

Three straight goals by Patinkin to begin the second quarter extended Babson’s advantage to 9-1, and Schmidt’s tally with 3:21 to play before halftime made it 10-1. Marzeoti’s goal with 2:14 to play trimmed Norwich’s deficit to 10-2, but Wilson struck again just 29 seconds later to give Babson an 11-2 cushion at the intermission.

Babson scored the only three goals of the third quarter as Caruso, Cykana and Mallon all found the back of the net. White scored a man-up goal for Norwich midway through the fourth quarter to account for the final margin.

Babson outshot Norwich 38-23, and the Beavers held a 48-44 edge in ground balls. Norwich won 11-of-19 faceoffs in the contest, but the Cadets were just 18-of-33 on clear attempts. There were a total of 14 penalties whistled in the game, but neither team did much with the man-up opportunities. Norwich went 1-for-10 with the extra man, while Babson was 0-for-4.

Norwich goalkeeper Nathan Proctor (5-4) made seven saves and picked up a team-high eight ground balls in the loss. Babson goalies Mike Saucier (Nashua, N.H.), Jay Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) and Ryan Lee (Wallingford, Conn.) combined to stop 10 shots, while allowing just three goals. Saucier (8-5) played the entire first half and picked up the victory between the pipes for the Beavers.

The Beavers return to action on Saturday when they play host to MIT for a 1pm Pilgrim League contest.
