BABSON PARK, Mass.—Babson College scored four consecutive second-half goals, but the Beavers were unable to erase a four-goal halftime deficit and suffered an 8-4 loss to visiting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
With the loss Babson moves to 2-3 on the year, while Rensselaer improves to 2-1 overall.
Senior Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.), classmate Taylor Segreti (North Potomac, Md.), junior Samuel Mishkind (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and sophomore Owen Allen (Franklin. Mass.) each contributed one goal, while first-year Will Messner (S. Kingstown, R.I.) won 5-of-11 face-offs for the Beavers. Sophomore goaltender Christopher Aranalde (Rockville Centre, N.Y) recorded 10 saves on the afternoon.
Junior Cliff Kigar (Delaware, Ohio) led all players in scoring with two goals and three assists, while sophomore Owen Putman (Round Lake, N.Y) added a goal and an assist for the Engineers. Senior goalkeeper Parker Smith (Cordova, Tenn.) turned away 13 shots to earn his second win of the year, and Zach Lima (Chatham, N.J.) posted a game-high three caused turnovers.
RPI recorded two goals in each of the first three quarters to take a 6-0 lead with 13:43 remaining in the third quarter. Segreti and Fabel recorded goals on the opposite ends of third quarter to send Babson into the final frame down, 6-2.
The Engineers were charged with a one-minute slashing penalty early in the fourth quarter and Mishkind was able to convert on the extra-man opportunity, putting the Beavers behind, 6-3, with 13:50 remaining in the regulation. With 7:57 left to play, Allen was able to convert on an extra-man opportunity of his own when he scored Babson's fourth consecutive goal as the Beavers trailed, 6-4. The momentum didn't last, as RPI recorded back to back goals over the final minutes of play to secure an 8-4 victory.
Babson went 19-for-23 on clearing opportunities and finished with a 41-35 edge in shots on goal, but trailed, 37-32, in ground balls.
The Beavers return to action on Wednesday when they host Roger Williams at 6:30 p.m., while RPI is set to for a match on Tuesday in Bradenton, Fla. against Umass Boston at 1:30 p.m.

• Babson was held scoreless in a half for the first time since a 6-5 OT loss to Skidmore on February 28, 2015.
• The Beavers' eight goals allowed are their fewest in a loss dating back to a 9-5 loss at Springfield on April 3, 2017.
