Collins Sixth-Minute Goal Helps Beavers Win Eighth Consecutive Home Opener
BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Mitchell Collins (Burlington, Mass.) scored the only goal of the match in the sixth minute as Babson College defeated visiting Western New England University, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Friday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With the victory, Babson opens the year at 1-0-0, while Western New England starts at 0-1-0.
Senior Steven Heintzelman (Middleton, Mass.) finished with four saves for the Beavers. His counterpart, Golden Bears' senior Dylan Husted (South Deerfield, Mass.), stopped two shots in defeat.
Following a foul near midfield, Babson first-year Jack Dugan (Haddonfield, N.J.) served a long free kick into the box. Husted came off his line to make a play on the ball but mishandled it allowing Collins to pounce on the rebound for his third career goal.
Despite getting outshot 9-7 in the match the Green and White had the better opportunities and nearly doubled its advantage twice in the early moments of the second half. Sophomore Ben Cawood (Santa Rosa, Calif.) missed just wide of the right post in the 51st minute and classmate Ross Shellow (Miami, Fla.) sent a glancing header wide of the back post following a Collins corner kick in the 55th minute.
Western New England's best chance to equalize came in the 76th minute when senior Brendan Clafin (Burlington, Mass.) missed just wide.
Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Southern Maine for a 3 p.m. start, while the Golden Bears host Bridgewater State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
