Swimming and Diving Splits with WPI
BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Babson College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in a closely contested meet on Saturday afternoon against WPI at Morse Pool on the Babson campus. The men won their half of the meet by a score of 149-132 while the women fell to the Engineers by a close score of 151-147.
On the men's side, first-year Greg Bissett (Cerritos, Calif.) led the way with four first place swims in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.94; the 100 yard freestyle in 48.55 and in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.18. Bissett along with teammates senior Ted Plaisted (Mountain Lakes, N.J.); sophomore Ryan Pope (Hawthorne, N.Y.) and sophomore Tom Foutsitzis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) were all part of the first place 200 yard medley relay team that finished in 1:41.97. Plaisted and Foutsitzis also took first place in two individual events each. Plaisted finished the 50 yard freestyle in 26.19 and the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 54.32. Foutsitzis took the first place finish in both the 50 yard butterfly and the 100 yard butterfly with times of 23.86 and 54.32 respectively. First-year Ryan Akiba (Corona del Mark, Calif.) came in first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.46. Senior Aaron Paradis (Norwich, Conn.) had another solid showing placing first in both the 1 meter dive with a score of 254.75 and the 3 meter five with a score of 273.95.
Though the women fell three points short of WPI, there were several first place finishes for the Beavers. Sophomores Meaghan Rhode (St. Paul, Minn.) and Brittany Bishop (Little Neck, N.Y.) finished on top in three events each. Rhode's first place finishes included the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:48.72 and in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:57.03. For Bishop, first place came in the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard freestyles with times of 26.26 and 57.64 respectively. The two were also part of the first place 400 yard freestyle relay team also consisting of first-year Albertine Turrini (Paris, France) and sophomore Sara Martinek (Riverside, Ill.) which finished with a time of 3:56.18. Martinek also took first place in the 200 yard freestyle finishing in 2:05.03. Sophomore Nikita Nadkarni (North Brunswick, N.J.) and first-year Kiera Yeager (Huntington, N.Y.) rounded out the group with first place finishes. Nadkarni finished the 50 yard breaststroke in 34.07 and Yeager took first place in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:06.49.
Both teams will next take the pool on Saturday, November 21st when they take on Bowdoin College and MIT at Bowdoin beginning at 1pm.
