Swimming and Diving Both Top Bridgewater on Senior Night; Men Reach Highest Win Total in 10 Years

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Babson College men's swimming and diving team achieved its highest win total in a decade on Thursday, as the Beavers defeated visiting Bridgewater State, 145-127, on Senior Night at the Morse Swimming Center. The Babson women's team was also in action against the Bears, wrapping up its 2012-13 dual meet schedule with a 158-122 victory.

Prior to Thursday's meet, there was a brief ceremony in honor of Babson's 11 seniors: Flynn Lincoln, Bryn Powell, Albertine Turrini, Nevart Varadian, Edvard Arnet, Garek Berard, Greg Bissett, Rob Chapruet, Greg DeWitt, Michael Flaherty, and David Yoon. The group then proceeded to turn in several outstanding performances, spearheaded by Powell's first-place finishes in the 50 and 100 free, DeWitt's victory in the 50 back, and Bissett's triumph in the 100 back.

Other top performances by the Babson seniors included second-place finishes by Lincoln in the 3-meter diving, Varadian in the 1-meter diving, DeWitt in the 100 back, and Turrini in both the 50 back and 100 back. Yoon added a third-place effort in the 50 fly, while Chapruet did the same in the 50 free. Powell added to her stellar night by swimming on two winning relay teams for the women, and Bissett and Flaherty each swam on the men's victorious 200 medley relay squad. DeWitt and Berard also swam well in the 200 medley relay, with the former leading off and the latter anchoring Babson's second-place quartet.

Other big winners on Thursday included first-year An Truong, who won the 200 free, 500 free, and 200 IM, and sophomore Erica Riccardi, who won the 50 back, 100 back, and 50 fly.

Both teams will compete at the NEWMAC Championships at MIT on February 14-17. Before that, the men will wrap up their regular season with a meet at Springfield this Saturday at 1 p.m.

MEET NOTES: Now sporting a record of 8-3 with one regular season meet remaining, the Babson men have achieved the program's highest win total since the Beavers finished 9-5 back in 2002-03... The women's team finishes its regular season with a mark of 4-9, giving the senior class a total of 18 dual meet victories in their collegiate career.
