Swimming & Diving Opens NEWMAC Championships With Strong 800 Free Relay
WORCESTER, Mass.—The Babson College men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened the 2014 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships with the 800-yard freestyle relay on Thursday night. The men had a pair of teams race, earning 58 points towards its overall total of 70, while the women's team collected 26 points in the event.
In the men's race, the Beavers' "A" squad comprised of seniors Rene Del Castillo (Cancun, Mexico) and Isaac Breen-Franklin (Severna Park, Md.), junior Gustavo Chan (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore An Truong (West Roxbury, Mass.) posted a time of 7:04.67 to come in sixth. Juniors Ashish Golconda (Marlboro, N.J.) and Aaron Pomeroy (Cottage Grove, Wisc.) teamed with first-years Jason Chan (Worcester, Mass.) and Bill Kim (McLean, Va.) to finish 13th with a time of 7:23.36.
The Babson women's team of juniors Kendall Ford (Geneva, Ill.) and Ascia Johnson (North Brunswick, N.J.), sophomore Becca Greenberg (Beverly, Mass.) and first-year Mallory Ham (Norwalk, Conn.) finished 10th with a time of 8:27.68.
Senior Kevin Bob Son (Seoul, Republic of Korea) was the lone diver to compete for the Beavers on Thursday night, earning 12 points with an 11th-place finish in the 3-meter event.
Both teams return to action for day two of the championship with preliminary races at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning. The finals for 11 events are set to begin at 6 p.m. tomorrow night.
