Damiecki Sets New Record in the 50-yard Butterfly as Beavers Sweep Double Dual Meet
BRIDGEWATER, Mass.—The Babson College men's and women's swimming & diving teams wrapped up regular season competition with a sweep of Bridgewater State and Norwich on Saturday afternoon at Moriarty Pool. The men defeated the host Bears 158-127 and cruised past Norwich 194-88, while the women's squad beat the Cadets 162-96 and narrowly edged Bridgewater State 144-136.
The Babson men recorded their ninth and 10th dual-meet victories of the season, marking the first time since 2002 and just the third time since 1992 that they have registered 10 or more wins. The women's squad also reached the five-win mark for the first time since 2014.
The Green and White won nine of 14 swimming events in the men's half of the meet, highlighted by sophomore Alex Damiecki (Centerville, Mass.) breaking his own school record in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 23.06. He also touched the wall first in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:56.68, and teamed with both senior Mitchell Posk (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and first-year Lachlan Dibbayawan (Bangkok, Thailand) to help the Beavers record victories in both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays.
Sophomore Jack Lucero (Huntington Beach, Calif.) also had a huge day for the Green and White, recording three wins in three races. He opened the meet with back-to-back triumphs in the 1000-yard and 200-yard freestyle events, and then capped off the day with a victory in the 500 free.
Posk clocked in at 22.06 to win the 50 free and first-year Taras Polakoff (Orange Country, Calif.) registered Babson's other win with a time of 2:03.61 in the 200-yard backstroke. Posk added a runner-up finish in the 100 free, while Dibbayawan came in second in the 50-yard breaststroke.
Senior Alex Grant (St. Petersburg, Fla.) came in second in the 200-yard butterfly, junior Kenneth Mun (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) was the runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke, and first-years Kevin Luu (Malden, Mass.) and Connor O'Brien (Tempe, Ariz.) placed second in the 50-yard backstroke and 1000-yard freestyle, respectively.
The Babson women got multiple victories from three competitors and finished first in nine events as part of their double dual meet sweep, led by a pair of season-best times from first-year Celine Nie (Irvine, Calif.). She won the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 29.89 and later picked up a victory in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 28.08.
First-year Jordan Mailly (Glastonbury, Conn.) claimed both the 200 butterfly and 200 back, while junior Tessa Amoroso (Rowley, Mass.) won both diving events and recorded her top score of the winter (246.15) on the 3-mter board. Sophomore Tirza Rentovich (Harrisburg, Pa.) touched the wall first in the 50 free and first-year Luna Zhang (Auburndale, Mass.) recorded a season-best time of 2:46.85 to finish first in the 200 breaststroke.
Junior Olivia Gilbert (Portland, Maine) collected the Beavers' finally victory of the day in the 500 free, while Mailly (200 IM), Zhang (50 breast) and Rentovich (100 free) all contributed one runner-up finish apiece. First-years Julia Ferrara (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and Nataliya Gowan (San Antonio, Texas) came in second in the 1000 free and 200 free, respectively.
Ferrara also came in third in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM, while junior Maria Orive (Guatemala City, Guatemala) placed third in the 200 and 500 free.
Babson will return to action on Thursday, February 22, when it begins competition in the four-day NEWMAC Championships at MIT.
