Swimming & Diving Starts Strong at NEWMAC Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Babson College men's and women's swimming & diving teams kicked off the 2018 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships with strong performances in the 800-yard freestyle relay on Thursday night inside the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool at MIT.

The first-year quartet of Jordan Mailly (Glastonbury, Conn.), Nataliya Gowan (San Antonio, Texas), Julia Ferrara (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and Celine Nie (Irvine, Calif.) got the weekend underway by coming in eighth with a time of 8:15.40 in the 800 free. The time was the Beavers' best of the season by just over nine seconds and was the program's best since posting a time of 8:12.63 at the 2012 NEWMAC Championships.

On the men's side, the team of seniors Mitchell Posk (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Alex Grant (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and sophomores Alex Damiecki (Centerville, Mass.) and Jack Lucero (Huntington Beach, Calif.) came in fourth with a season-best time of 7:03.13. The result was just under two seconds off of the program's school record set back in 2016.

Junior Kenneth Mun (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) and first-years Taras Polakoff (Orange County, Calif.), Connor O'Brien (Tempe, Ariz.) and Kaden Shover (Boca Raton, Fla.) came in fifth in the B final with a time of 7:21.46 in the 800 free relay.

The Green and White returns to the pool for the first full day of the championships on Friday at 10 a.m.
