Beavers Set Third Record of the Weekend in Women's 400 Free Relay
WORCESTER, Mass.—The Babson College women's swimming & diving team set it first school record of the season and the men had at least one competitor in the finals of all seven events on the final day of the Gompei Invitational at WPI's Recreation and Athletic Center Pool on Sunday.
The Beavers totaled 384 points to finish in 10th place overall with 1,299 pointers in the combined team score meet. Division I Bryant came in first, while No. 13 Rowan edged the host Engineers by 46.5 points to finish second. No. 25 Stevens and Division II Bentley came in fourth and fifth, respectively.
The highlight of the final day came in the last event of the night as sophomore Celine Nie (Irvine, Calif.) and first-years Abigail Voce (Oxford, N.Y.), Stella Hu (Wellesley, Mass.) and Elizabeth Demoine (Avon-by-the-Sea, N.J.) broke a 10-year old school record with their time of 3:41.44 in the 400 freestyle relay. Babson's men's relay squad of sophomore Lachlan Dibbayawan (Bangkok, Thailand) and first-years Aaron Huynh (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Ethan Yoo (Redondo Beach, Caif.) and Walter Lehneis (Hackettstown, N.J.) came in eighth in the relay with a time of 3:12.69.
Voce began the evening session by finishing fifth in the A final of the women's 100 free with a season-best time of 54.04. Huynh placed eighth in the men's 100 free final as he touched the wall in season-best time of 47.19, while Yoo came in ninth in the C final with a time of 48.63.
Three Babson men reached the finals in the 200 backstroke, led by sophomore Taras Polakoff (Orange County, Calif.), who was ninth in the A final with a season-best time of 1:57.61. First-year Reid Chavez (Shelton, N.Y.) posted a fourth-place showing in the C final with his fastest time of the year (2:00.74), which was just under three seconds ahead of sophomore Kevin Luu (Malden, Mass.), who placed eighth with a season-best time of 2:03.26).
Junior Jack Lucero (Huntington Beach, Calif.) came in third in the B final of the 500 free clocking in with a season-best time of 4:49.51. Demoine won the B final in the women's 100 IM with a season-best time of 1:02.68, while Lehneis came in seventh in the men's 100 IM B final, touching the wall in a time of 56.17 after posting his fastest time of the fall (56.05) in the prelims.
Senior Kenneth Mun (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) won the men's 50 breaststroke B final by recording a season-best time of 28.68, and the Beavers had four men qualify for the finals in the 200 butterfly. Yoo came in third and Lucero ninth in the B final, while Chavez and first-year Aiden Asuncion-Duong (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the C final.
Following a break for final exams and the holidays, Babson returns to action on January 10 at Wellesley.
• The Beavers finished 10th for the second time in three seasons at the Gompei Invitational and their 1,299 points are more than 500 more than they scored at the event in each of the last two seasons.
• In addition to the women's 400 free relay record on Sunday, Huynh broke his own program record in the 50 backstroke and also set a new school mark in the 200 free over the weekend.
• Senior Tessa Amoroso (Rowley, Mass.) achieved her first NCAA regional diving qualification score with a total of 410.00 on the 3-meter diving board on Saturday.
