Men and Women Break 800 Free Records on Opening Night of NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships

WORCESTER, Mass.—The Babson College men's and women's swimming & diving teams competed in two events and set two school records on the opening night of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships on Thursday night inside the WPI Sports and Recreation Center Pool.

The Beavers' quartet of sophomore Celine Nie (Irvine, Calif.) and first-year Elizabeth Demoine (Avon-by-the Sea, N.J.), Stella Hu (Wellesley, Mass.) and Abigail Voce (Oxford, N.Y.) shattered a 12-year-old mark in the women's 800-yard freestyle relay by posting a time of 8:03.67. The time was over six seconds faster than the previous school record and helped the Green and White pick up 32 points with a seventh-place finish.

Not to be outdone, the men's 800 free relay team of junior Alex Damiecki (Centerville, Mass.) and first-years Aaron Huynh (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Walter Lehneis (Hackettstown, N.J.) and Ethan Yoo (Redondo Beach, Calif.) also broke the program's previous record set back in 2016 by just over six seconds. The Beavers posted a time of 6:55.41 to finish fourth in the event for the second year in a row.

In addition to the school record in the A final, junior Jack Lucero (Huntington Beach, Calif.), sophomore Taras Polakoff (Orange County, Calif.) and first-years Joseph Wellmann (Cohasset, Mass.) and Reid Chavez (Shelton, Conn.) touched the wall in a time of 7:12.82 to place third in the B final.

Babson returns to the pool for day two of the championships on Friday at 10 a.m.
