Men's Tennis Earns #2 Seed After Falling to MIT, 8-1

BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Babson College men's tennis team fell to MIT, 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon in a battle of the two undefeated teams in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Prior to Tuesday's match, both teams were 4-0 in the conference and had already secured a first round bye in this week's NEWMAC tournament. With the win, MIT improves to 13-2 overall, 5-0 in the NEWMAC, earning the #1 seed in the NEWMAC championship tournament. Babson is now 9-10 overall, 4-1 in the conference and is the #2 seed in the NEWMAC tournament.

Babson's lone point came from junior Alex Kamergorodsky (Millis, Mass.) who won the number one singles match 6-2, 3-6, 10-6. With the victory, Kamergorodsky improved his overall singles record to 12-7 on the year and has gone undefeated in NEWMAC play with a record of 5-0.

The number one doubles team made up of Kamergorodsky and Brian Lafayette (Burlington, Vt.) competed in a closely contested match where the Beavers led 6-3 but were unable to keep the momentum eventually giving the point to MIT's Kevin Pang (Torrance, Calif.) and Ken Van Tilburg (Kappellen, Belgium) in the 8-6 loss.

For MIT, Van Tilburg and teammates Brian Wee (Woodbury, N.Y.), Peden Nichols (Great Falls, Vt.) and Samuel Harmatz (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) each earned two points for the Engineers winning both of their matches in the win.

Tuesday's match marked the final home contest for Babson's lone senior Steve Huang (Edmonds, Wash.). Huang is 2-0 in doubles play this year and was named to the NEWMAC All-Academic team in 2007 and 2008.

Babson and MIT have both earned a first round bye in the NEWMAC championships and will travel to Wheaton College for the semifinals this Saturday with matches starting at 10:30 am. The opponents will be determined in the first round matches taking place on Thursday afternoon.
