Kamergorodsky Named NEWMAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year; Five Others Receive Honors


BABSON PARK, Mass. - The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) released its men's tennis postseason honors this week, and conference tournament runner-up Babson College received 10 total awards among six individuals. Highlighting the selections for the Beavers was junior Alex Kamergorodsky (Millis, Mass.), who became the first Beavers to received NEWMAC Player of the Year honors since the inception of the conference in 1998-99.

In addition to his historic Player of the Year award, Kamergorodsky was named All-Conference First Team at number one singles and All-NEWMAC Second Team at number one doubles. He went undefeated in NEWMAC regular season singles play, going 5-0, while joining junior captain Brian Lafayette (Burlington, Vt.) in posting a 3-2 mark at first doubles. Overall, Kamergorodsky won 13 singles matches and 10 doubles contests this year, giving him 31 singles victories and 31 doubles triumphs in his outstanding career.

Lafayette also garnered multiple honors for Babson, earning All-Conference Second Team recognition at both number one doubles and number five singles while also claiming NEWMAC Academic All-Conference status. He went 3-1 at fifth singles in conference play this spring, giving him a total of 10 wins on the year. Along with his 10 doubles wins with Kamergorodsky, Lafayette now boasts 22 singles victories and 26 doubles wins in his career.

Joining Lafayette with All-Conference Second Team honors were sophomore Justin Albert (Newton, Mass.) at number two singles and junior captain Ken Lin (Cavendish Heights, Hong Kong) at number three singles. Also an Academic All-Conference selection, Albert won a total of eight singles matches this season, including a 3-1 mark in NEWMAC play at number two. Lin heralded a 3-2 record at number three singles against conference opponents, giving him six singles victories on the season.

In addition to Albert and Lafayette, Babson also placed senior Steve Huang (Edmonds, Wash.) and junior Moises Numa (Talahassee, Fla.) on the Academic All-Conference Team. Numa collected one win in singles play and three more in doubles competition this year, while went 2-0 with two different partners in doubles play.

As a team, Babson finished 10-11 against a very strong schedule this year, including a 4-1 mark in the NEWMAC. Entering the conference tournament as the second seed, Babson received an opening round bye and the defeated #3 Wheaton, 5-1, in the semifinals before falling to 11-time NEWMAC Champion MIT by the same score in the finals.
