Men's Tennis Opens With 5-4 Victory Over Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. - Head Coach Jim Berrigan recorded his 100th career coaching victory on Tuesday, as the Babson College men's tennis team opened it's 2009-10 season with a 5-4 victory over host Roger Williams University. The Hawks jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after the doubles matches, but the Beavers fought back and won four of the six singles matches on their way to the win.

In the number one doubles match, Dan Kleitz (Wethersfield, Conn.) and David Lange (Great Neck, N.Y.) of RWU defeated Austin Conti (Murray Hill, N.J.) and Artur Dutka (Teaneck, N.J.) of Babson by a score of 8-5.  The second pairing of Hawks, Spencer Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) and Kevin Erikson (Tolland, Conn.), were also victorious in a close one 9-8 (3-0 tiebreaker) over Justin Albert (Newton, Mass.) and Nissim Cohen-Sabban (Chula Vista, Calif.). Babson was able to salvage one point at third doubles, with the team of Brian Lafayette (Burlington, Vt.) and Zach Ringer (Minnetonka, Minn.) beating the pair from RWU, Suraj Pyla (Edison, N.J.) and Jason Pacino, by a score of 8-4.

The Beavers turned things around in singles play, winning four out of the six contests to take the overall match victory. Albert beat Lange in the number one singles match by scores of 6-4 and 6-0.  The second singles match swung things back in favor of RWU as Erikson was able to defeat Conti, 6-1, 6-4.  RWU also took the number three match in which Kyle Baker (Bolton, Conn.) beat Babson's Lafayette by scores of 6-3 and 7-5.  The fourth singles match was a hard-fought battle between Withington and Cohen-Sabban that was won by Cohen-Sabban in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.  The fifth Singles match saw Danny Schneider (Littleton, Mass.) from Babson defeat Pacino, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.  The sixth singles match was won by Dutka over Nicholas Hawvermale (Bethlehem, Conn.) by a score of 6-1, 1-6, 7-5.

With the loss, the Hawks dropped to 1-1 on the season.

Next up for Babson is Salve Regina, who they will host on Friday at 3:30 pm.  The Hawks return to action on October 1 when they host Springfield College at 3:30 pm.
