BRISTOL, R.I. – The Babson College men's tennis team swept the doubles play and then pulled out two key singles matches to earn a 5-4 road victory over host Roger Williams University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Hawks conclude their fall season with a record of 0-3.
The Beavers swept the three doubles matches, including a tight 9-8 (8-6) win at number three, where The duo of sophomores Erik Ooi (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) and Ferran Arimon (Miami, Fla.) defeated the Hawks' Kyle Bull (Pleasantville, N.Y.) and Zach Bussiere (Colchester, Vt.) for what would prove to be a crucial point. First-years Ramone Doyley (Kingston, Jamaica) and Roy Murdock (Santa Monica, Calif.) added an 8-4 win at number one for Babson, while first-year Connor DeFiore (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and senior captain Danny Schneider (Littleton, Mass.) completed the sweep with an 8-3 win at two.
The Hawks would come back to take four of the six singles matches. Bussiere edged Murdock, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (12-10) at three, Jeff DeNunzio (Barrington, R.I.) picked up a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over DeFiore at one, Ryan Swanson beat Arimon 6-3, 6-1 at four, and Spencer Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) earned a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Ooi at six. However, Babson would clinch the victory with straight-set wins at the two remaining singles positions, with Doyley beating Kevin Erikson (Tolland, Conn.) 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at two and Schneider topping Taylor Webster (Bristol, Conn.) 6-3, 7-5 at five.
