SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Babson College men's tennis team saw its 2012 postseason hopes dashed on Saturday, as the Beavers fell to host Springfield, 7-2, on the final day of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season. As a result, Springfield (7-7, 2-3 NEWMAC) locked up the fourth and final spot in the upcoming conference tournament, while Babson (5-12, 1-4) is forced to settle for fifth place in the final league standings.
The Beavers found themselves in a 3-0 hole early, as Springfield prevailed in all three doubles matches. Sophomore Hubert Cromback (Cambridge, Mass.) then put Babson on the board with a 6-2, 6-3 win at number three singles, but the Pride won four of the remaining five matches to run away with the 7-2 overall victory.
First-year Ramone Doyley (Kingston, Jamaica) accounted for Babson's only other win on Saturday, as he pulled out a hard-fought 6-4, 6-7 (5), (10-7) superbreaker victory at number one singles.
The Beavers will conclude their 2011-12 season with a pair of non-conference contests next week. They will host Emerson College as part of Senior Day on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. before heading to Endicott for a 3:30 p.m. season finale with the Gulls on Thursday.
