BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Babson College men's tennis team earned its first victory of the 2012-13 season on Wednesday, as the Beavers defeated visiting Roger Williams University, 8-1, in non-conference action at the Farwell Courts.
Babson (1-1) led 2-1 after doubles play, thanks to an 8-6 win by the combination of sophomore Ramone Doyley (Kingston, Jamaica) and first-year Roberto Perez (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) at number one and an 8-3 triumph by the team of senior Simeon Human (Trelex Vaud, Switzerland) and first-year Victor Vu (Los Angeles, Calif.) at number two. Roger Williams (0-2) earned its lone point of the afternoon at number three, where first-years Eric Laboissonniere (Cumberland, R.I.) and Jonah Schwartz (Orange, Conn.) edged Babson's duo of sophomore Connor DeFiore (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and first-year Isaac Thylen (Surfside, Fla.) in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (5).
The Beavers put the match away by winning all six contests, including five in straight sets. Perez cruised, 6-1, 6-1, at number one, Tyhlen won, 6-2, 6-1 at two, Doyley prevailed, 6-3, 6-1 at three, Vu won, 6-0, 6-4, at four, and Human coasted, 6-0, 6-1, at five. The closest singles battle of the day came at number six, where Beavers' first-year Davin Garcia (Essex Junction, Vt.) rallied from a set down to defeat the Hawks' Kyle Bull (Pleasantville, N.Y.) in a thrilling third-set superbreaker, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (13-11).
